Dazed and Confused: Cash Cheats Football Fans Out of a D-I Playoff System

Ronnie BlairDec 14, 2008

As I watch the BCS championship game on Jan. 8, 2009, the tune of an old song will be bouncing between my ears.

The name of the song is simple, and may trigger some people to laugh out loud. The song is how much is the dog in the window.

As a fan of college football, I often think of the reasons why WE as fans don't have the privilege of having a playoff system in Division I football.

I mean, just sit and think about all the excitement March Madness creates, and the College (baseball) World Series, the Frozen Four (hockey, for those who don't know), and on and on and on.

What is missing from that list? COLLEGE FOOTBALL!

Think about it, really, just think about how many state champions are being decided by a tournament format? Why are teams in less prestigious conferences not rewarded with an opportunity to play for that pretty crystal ball that is in the picture of this article, MONEY!

That's right, money the root of all evil. And that root has itself firmly placed around the throat of one of the most beloved sports in this nation.

Money is driving the BCS. You can argue left you or you can argue right, but the ills that destroy the BCS are green in nature.

Consider this: Florida plays The Citadel late in the season, destroys them and then jumps to No. 2 (in some polls) prior to facing Alabama in the SEC championship game. Texas' only loss is to a top five team, but they fall behind Florida?

So, let me get this straight? The Citadel is a tougher opponent than Texas Tech? Yeah, that's it, adding a little sugar (cupcake) to your diet insures that you play for the national championship, as long are you are in the PAC-10, SEC, ACC, Big 12, Big East, or Big 10. Did I miss any of the power conferences?

Chew on this thought and maybe you'll get the point of this article; in any other sport if a team from a smaller conference goes undefeated and earn the right to win a championship they have to do it by going through a tournament.

But in D-I football, only the teams that generate the most revenue are considered for the championship game.

This season is proof that college football needs to rethink the BCS situation. The only reason that Florida is in the national title game and not Texas is simple, Money! Where is the game being played?

Fans deserve better! There are 120 D-I teams with football programs.

Everyone one should have the opportunity to fight for that trophy, not just the SEC, Big 12, ACC, Big East, Big 10, Pac 10, and Notre Dame (and that's just because of the past history of the program).

Listen up NCAA, WE WANT A Playoff system. The BCS is a high-priced call girl that fans no longer want to say is pretty. The system is BUSTED and we deserve better!
