Pacquiao vs Marquez: Mayweather Superfight Is Dead If Pacman Falls to Marquez

Brian MaziqueNov 9, 2011

Manny Pacquiao has never really solved Juan Manuel Marquez. On Saturday, November 12, anything besides pure domination is a setback for the popular Filipino champion. A setback means that fans will doubt his elite status. That will hurt his appeal and leverage in regards to participating in the superfight with Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

No one will give credit to Marquez and say that Dinamita was a better fighter than believed. The boxing world already knows what Marquez has to offer. We've seen him at his best (9th Round TKO over Juan Diaz) and his worst (unanimous decision loss to Floyd Mayweather, Jr). Let us not forget, Marquez is 38-years-old.

If Pacquiao can't soundly defeat a man eight years his senior, it will not look good for Pac-Man. Especially considering he's already had two controversial battles with Marquez, one at 130 lbs and 125 lbs. The first one was a disputed draw and the second was a disputed split-decision.

Pacquiao needs to prove he has grown since the last time he and Marquez clashed. He needs to prove that he can exploit a fighter whose fighting well above their natural weight; blowing Marquez away is the best way for him to prove that.

With Mayweather's domination of Marquez, it is even more imperative that Pacquiao shows he can keep pace. The old boxing adage is true; styles does indeed make the fight, but casual fans aren't going to subscribe to that logic.

For a fight, or potential fight as massive as the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout, the casual fan's opinion is very important. That said, Pacquiao has a difficult test on his hands this Saturday; it is one he must pass with flying colors.
