WWE News: WWE Sets New Record for First Day Ticket Sales for Wrestlemania

There are plenty of fans—myself included—who think that professional wrestling is nowhere near as popular as it once was, like during the Attitude Era. 

WWE’s TV ratings are down, pay-per-view buyrates are down and the product often just isn’t as good these days. But, apparently that’s not hurting the company’s business too much.

STAMFORD, Conn., Nov 07, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) — WWE(R) announced today that first day ticket sales for WrestleMania XXVIII in Miami resulted in a record gross of $6.3 million, shattering the previous first day record of $4.8 million for the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania.

There are two main reasons why I think the WWE raked in more than $6 million the first day that WrestleMania 28 tickets went on sale.

For starters, have you seen the prices for tickets to the granddaddy of them all? As PWInsider.com notes, the $1,500 price tag for any seat on the first four rows is the highest in WWE history.

Other tickets are selling for as much as $850, $450 and $300. Yeah, that’s a little ridiculous.

Not to mention that WrestleMania is being held in The Rock’s hometown of Miami, and the People’s Champ will be facing John Cena in what is arguably the biggest match in the history of professional wrestling.

Though we don’t really have any idea what the rest of the pay-per-view’s card will look like, it appears as if The Rock vs. Cena is going to be enough of a draw by itself to completely carry the show. So, I guess this is one of those rare times when I will praise the WWE.

The company made the decision to announce The Rock/Cena match nearly a year in advance, is bringing The Rock back at Survivor Series and has kept that feud fresh in our minds even though The Rock hasn’t been on TV much.

Congratulations, WWE. You’ve made a smart business decision, and you’re making a ton of money because of it.
