The 2 Teams Playing for the BCS Championship Will Be?

Jason BishopNov 7, 2011

With the college football season in its last few weeks and still so many possibilities about the two teams that will play for the AFCA National Championship Trophy here is what to expect and who will find themselves in the national Championship game.

LSU, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Stanford, Boise State, Oklahoma, and Oregon all could have a strong case to present to play for the national title when the smoke clears.

So who will be there and who will be left on the outside looking in?

A Roadblock in LSU's Way?

1 of 8

We all know that LSU is the best team in the country and their win over Alabama proved it. Let's not forget the Tigers beat the Tide in Tuscaloosa and no one does that to the Tide!

LSU still has number eight Arkansas on their schedule for the regular season finale and likely 15th ranked Georgia in the SEC Title Game.

While Arkansas can put up a ton of points by barely lifting a finger that won't be the case against the Bayou Bengals. The Tigers have a secondary that would rival some teams in the NFL. Arkansas will find it very difficult to stretch the field against LSU and will be forced to run the ball which is something they don't do very well.  The Razorbacks are 83rd in the country in rushing yards.

LSU is also at home in Death Valley for this game. Result....LSU blows Arkansas out of the water!

Then LSU will make the trip to play the SEC East winner—likely the Bulldogs. This is an intriguing match-up.

Georgia defense's is one of the most talented and fastest in the SEC and the 3-4 system the Dawgs run will create some problems for the Tigers.  This game will be a lot closer than most experts think but in the end LSU will escape Atlanta with the SEC crown.

End Result—LSU runs the table and ends up undefeated.

Showdown at High Noon Approaches

2 of 8

Oklahoma State has beaten Texas and escaped with wins against Kansas State and Texas A&M to see themselves rise to the number two ranking in the country.

The only true test remaining for the Cowboys is a showdown with Oklahoma in Bedlam on December 3rd.

The Sooners suffered a tough blow losing star Wide Receiver Ryan Broyles for the season and will play Bedlam in Stillwater.

If Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma they will find themselves playing for a National Title without any question.

However, that won't happen.

Oklahoma is still the third best team in the country regardless of what the rankings say and they will end the Championship dreams of the Cowboys on the last week of the season knocking the Cowboys into the one loss group.

End Result...Oklahoma State falls to Oklahoma ending their perfect season.

Roll Tide Roll

3 of 8

Alabama suffered a devastating loss to LSU which most thought would end their title hopes. However, the pollsters only dropped the Tide one spot to third in the country. This gives Bama a realistic chance of making the title game without even winning their division.

The Tide has quality wins against Penn State and Arkansas.

Alabama will have to go on the road to Auburn to take on the Tigers in the Iron Bowl on November 26th.  While you never know what can happen in this game Auburn doesn't possess the offensive firepower to be able to move the consistently against the Tide's defense.

Alabama will not lose another game and will have the benefit of not having to play an extra game since it wont be in the SEC Title game.

End Result...Alabama wins out and becomes the strongest one loss team.

A Duck in the Tree?

4 of 8

Stanford has had the benefit of a cupcake schedule for the majority of the season and finds itself as one of four unbeaten teams.

The Cardinal have a blowout win over Washington and escaped Los Angeles with a triple overtime win over USC.

Despite these wins Stanford's conference, the PAC-12, is very weak overall. They will get a true test this week against last year's runner-up, number eight Oregon.

The Ducks will come to Stanford Stadium for a Pac-12 showdown with the winner likely headed to the PAC-12 Championship game. Stanford has not seen a team as fast as the Ducks and Oregon can score in bunches.  This game will be a shootout with Heisman hopeful, Andrew Luck, keeping the Cardinal in it.

It won't be enough. Oregon will come to Stanford and knock off the Cardinal keeping them out of the PAC-12 Championship game.  This will add Stanford to the list of one loss teams with a loss to Oregon who already lost to LSU in the season opener.

End Result...Stanford falls to the Ducks with little chance to play for the BCS Championship.

A Bronco Ride

5 of 8

Boise State has remained steady winning most of its games comfortably and has watched team after team jump over them in the rankings. Currently the Broncos are ranked fifth in the country.

Boise has one quality win and that was over 15th ranked Georgia in the season opener.  Let's make no excuses for Boise, their schedule is ridiculously weak.

However, the Broncos still have one more tough test against TCU on Saturday which will determine the Mountain West Champion. TCU is by no stretch of the imagination the defensive Juggernaut they were a year ago and will struggle against Kellen Moore and Boise's offense.

End Result...Boise will run the table and end up undefeated when the smoke clears.

Laying the Boom Down

6 of 8

Many things have changed for Oklahoma in the past few weeks.  The Sooners were supposed to be the best bet to take down Alabama or LSU, but instead they are needing help to find their way back into the title picture.

The loss to Texas Tech was nothing more than devastating to Oklahoma's season.  Oklahoma must now win out, which includes winning the aforementioned Oklahoma State game in Stillwater and do a lot of praying.

What Oklahoma does have are quality wins over Texas and Kansas State, but make no mistake about it they need a miracle to get to the BCS Championship game.

Oklahoma will have a chance to improve their BCS score with upcoming games against 25th ranked Baylor and second ranked Oklahoma State.  If the Sooners win out they will certainly be in the conversation. If the Sooners do win out it will look good to the pollsters and they may jump Boise State and to find themselves ranked third, but that is probably best case scenario.

End Result...Oklahoma does wins out and hopes it's enough to jump the two teams in front of them.

The Quack Attack

7 of 8

The Oregon Ducks have flown under the radar all season. Oregon lost it's season opener to LSU and since has gone undefeated and demolished everyone in their way.

Oregon has quality wins over Arizona State and Washington Not just wins but "take you behind the woodshed until you bleed" wins.

However the Ducks are ranked eighth in the country and need some help as well. They can certainly improve their case with a win over fourth ranked Stanford this week, USC next week, and then win the PAC-12 Championship Game.

Oregon finds itself in the same situation as Oklahoma. They need to win and win big for style points and hope the pollsters approve. The one thing Oregon has going for it that Oklahoma doesn't is a championship game which will give the Ducks a chance to earn some extra points in the BCS rankings.

End Result...Oregon finds itself in the Rose Bowl hoping for a big win and someone to beat LSU.

And the Winner Is.....?

So what does all that mean?  It means that once all the smoke clears there will be one of two scenarios that will happen.

The first is an Alabama/LSU rematch for the National title.  This is the most likely of the two scenarios.

The other is a LSU/Boise State match up. The only way that happens is if the voters decide they don't want to see a rematch between the Tigers and the Tide.  Which would make Boise State next in line with the computer rankings.

The Boise State situation may sound like a long shot but it has happened before. In 2006 Ohio State and Michigan occupied the top two spots in the BCS and met in the regular season. Ohio State won the game and Michigan did not drop below number two in the country in the BCS.

The following week the voters decided they did not want to see a rematch in the title game and voted a two loss LSU team number two.  That LSU team won the National Title. Thus, there is precedent for such a drastic voting.

The following is how these previously discussed seven teams will finish in the heading into the BCS Championship game.

1.LSU

2.Alabama

3.Boise State

4.Oklahoma

5.Oregon

6.Oklahoma State

7.Stanford

There you have it!  So how is the BCS fair again?
