Bowl Projections: OK State More Likely to Miss BCS Bowl Than Play in Title Game

Kyle VassaloNov 7, 2011

Oklahoma State is one of the best teams in the country, but fans who are excited about getting the chance to see their team in a BCS Bowl are going to be sorely disappointed.

With the Cowboys cemented in the National Championship picture and essentially controlling their own destiny, the scenario of them running the table and entering the BCS Championship seems plausible, if not likely to some.

Unfortunately for Oklahoma State, they have the Oklahoma Sooners awaiting them at the end of the season. Oklahoma State's high-octane offense is able to mask their defensive shortcomings, but such will not be the case when they take on a far more balanced Sooners team.

Oklahoma State scores a ridiculous 50.1 PPG. Brandon Weeden orchestrates the second best passing offense in the league, and there is no arguing that the Cowboys are one of the most explosive offenses in college football.

Oklahoma suffered a hiccup against Texas Tech, but they blew away Kansas State on the road by a ridiculous 41-point margin, and are rolling once again. Oklahoma hasn't lost to Oklahoma State since 2002. Though this is the best Cowboys squad in school history, Landry Jones can hang with Weeden in a shootout, and the Sooners' defense will keep Oklahoma State from scoring the absurd amount of points that allowed them to escape Kansas State last week.

If Oklahoma State doesn't win the Big 12, they're going to be stuck with the Cotton Bowl against the third or fourth best team in the SEC. The Cowboys are a great team, they just aren't a National Championship team.

Texas A&M hand-fed them a victory, and their at times porous defense has been masked by their offense, but their luck is about to run out. Perhaps smashing a team like South Carolina in the Cotton Bowl is better than being humiliated by LSU in the National Championship.
