Big East Expansion Dilemma: What to Rename It?
With all the reports of the new Big East Conference, it sounds like there is no shortage of schools looking to join.
Besides the six schools that are being pursued by the Big East, those being Boise State, Air Force, SMU, Houston, Navy and Central Florida, there are other names popping up as well.
BYU, San Diego State, Temple and Memphis have all had rumors of interest in jumping on board the Big East boat.
At this point many might think it is becoming absurd, or even embarrassing.
However, what those individuals might be overlooking is the diversity, recruiting power, television contract potential and intriguing yearly football matchups of a greatly-expanded Big East.
If the Big East were brave enough to add all of those interested, and maybe a couple not yet mentioned, they could find themselves as the first "Super Conference," and go from being a conference burning to a conference on fire.
Let's say the Big East created a bigger western division than they have planned
Boise State, BYU, Air Force, San Diego State, Houston, SMU, Tulsa, Nevada
Add to that the Big East eastern division
Cincinnati, Louisville, Uconn, Rutgers, Central Florida, South Florida, Temple, Memphis
(Notre Dame in the east would be a dream come true, but not sure if it would ever happen)
Still, according to my count, and I could be wrong, that would be 14 states, and every key recruiting area in the country covered in one football conference.
This kind of alignment would allow a two-division system with a Championship game played at the end of every year.
Each division would play a seven-game in-division schedule with just two division cross-over games each season.
This would allow each team three non-conference games, and it would create a rotation of interesting and intriguing matchups.
This kind of conference, with two geographically designed divisions, would keep travel costs down, and television rights valuable. Not to mention, the recruiting base and reach would be outstanding.
Now, even if the Big East only adds the six schools, and possibly seven that they are looking at, it will still be all of those things I mentioned. Not as big, but still pretty solid.
However, no matter which way they go, they are going to have to think about renaming the conference.
Suggestions
If they go "Super Conference," I say "The Big Beast"... kidding, relax.
How about "The American 12...or 14...or 16" with two divisions named "The Founders" and "The Pioneers?"
Or, how about "The Big East-West" with two divisions called the "Sunrise" and "Sunset?" Corny, I know, but I am just trying to get you to think.
What about you? What do you think the Big East should change its name to after expansion is completed?
Of course, I know what the haters will say, but save your keyboard, we have probably heard all the junk before.
However, for those of you with creative minds, give some of your suggestions, and stay tuned for the latest Big East Conference expansion news.
