2011 Breeders' Cup Results: Bettors Suckered by Uncle Mo's Feel-Good Story
The world's infatuation with Uncle Mo is a classic case of a Cinderella story blinding bettors and tainting their reality.
By battling back from a rare liver disease, Uncle Mo captured the hearts of handicappers and came in grossly overrated as the odds-on favorite in the 2011 Breeders' Cup Classic.
Uncle Mo finished 10th and, even though he came in overrated, still comes as a shock. Even though he wasn't the best horse coming into this race, he was still one of the most highly-touted.
Nobody would predict he would fail to show and finish at the back of the pack.
So You Think is a more decorated horse that was overlooked in this race. He ended up finishing sixth in the race, but the fact that handicappers elected to favor Uncle Mo over So You Think points to just how much people bought into Uncle Mo's story.
Everyone was in his corner. The Kentucky Derby scratch is the ultimate comeback story and he had been running well prior to the race.
It's no surprise that he didn't win it all, but bettors were stunned when long-shot Drosselmeyer ended up winning it all.
Drosselmeyer, Game On Dude and Ruler On Ice made up the top three, which points to just how off the base handicappers were in this one. While the dark horses were impossible to see coming, it's the inability to recognize Uncle Mo's shortcomings that is unforgivable.
Uncle Mo's storybook ending never came and his tale is a cautionary one. Rarely is it prudent to bet on the horse you want to win.
