2011 Breeders' Cup Results: Drosselmeyer and Jockey Mike Smith Shock World
Drosselmeyer defied the odds when he and his jockey, Mike Smith, crossed the finish line first at the Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday.
Drosselmeyer, you may remember, won the 2010 Belmont Stakes but has suffered in his six races since then, winning just one of them.
Everyone was writing off this horse as a contender in the Classic, and he went off at 14-1 odds in the race for the $5 million purse.
It must have been one of the sweetest wins of Mike Smith’s Hall of Fame career.
It came at the expense of his ex-fiancé, Chantal Sutherland, aboard another long shot, Game On Dude.
Sutherland was about to become the first female in the history of the Breeders' Cup Classic to win when Drosselmeyer came storming up from behind and ended up winning by about a length and a half.
Smith was supposed to win the Classic last year with Zenyatta but suffered the only loss of the famed horse’s career. He had his redemption in the 2011 iteration of the event.
"That's one that will always hurt," Smith said, "but this sure helps. Last year I sat here devastated. I thought my life was over. To come back and win today in a race I got beat a nose in last year, thank God."
It definitely should help and the fact that he got it at the expense of an ex-girlfriend and at such long odds is certainly awesome.
Game On Dude finished second and Ruler On Ice in third place of the Classic.
