BCS Rankings: Why a Plus-One Format Would Be Perfect for This Year

T.J. McaloonNov 6, 2011

Almost every year the BCS is like a jammed freeway with a bunch of teams trying to find the exit ramp toward the National Title game.

Usually there are two or more teams that their fans can pump their chests out claiming that they are the best team in college football and they should be playing for the championship game.

Boise State fans I’m looking at you.

However, just like in life, the BCS is not a fair system and it will leave a team sitting on the outside looking in with a team or two complaining that they should have their fair shot.

This year, there are five teams that have a strong argument that they are the best team in college football today. They are perfect through all of their eight or nine games this year.

But because of the BCS system, only two of those teams, LSU and Oklahoma State, will get the chance to play for the "Coaches' Trophy" in New Orleans on Jan. 9.

Sorry about your luck, Stanford, Boise State and Houston. All three of you who have played perfect football this year will be left out in the cold with “what if” dreams in your back pocket as your only argument as to why you should be in the title game.

It’s why this year it would be perfect for a BCS playoff system.

What happens if all five of these teams finish with a perfect record? Go ahead and tell those teams, that a computer equation with a group of polls representing the Computer Poll, plus what the coaches voted for in the USA Today Coaches Poll, didn’t think that they are as good as LSU and Oklahoma State?

If the Plus-One system would go into effect this year and the BCS Standings were done today, we would have a matchup between three of the five undefeated team. It would (hypothetically) have No. 1 LSU vs. No. 4 Alabama and No. 2 Oklahoma St. vs. No. 3 Stanford.

The winners of those top four teams would play each other for the national title in New Orleans, with the winner finally having to play in a tournament setting for their championship.

But take a look at who is left out of this plus one tournament. Yup Boise State and Houston, both undefeated both non-BCS schools.

A Plus One tournament would be great this year, but it would still leave fans very upset as to why their school was left out from playing for the National Championship.
