Manchester City Juggernaut Rolls on

Jan StarrNov 6, 2011

Manchester City started the season with a 3-2 defeat against Manchester United in the Community Shield. Back then, they were expected to be challengers for the title—not outright favourites.

However, their season has panned out in such a way that they will be considered the favourites, should they maintain their impressive run until Christmas at least. City have lost just two matches all season—the second defeat coming against Bayern Munich.

In addition, after their first back-to-back wins in the Champions League, Manchester City do seem like a strong team that can even go to the semifinals of the Champions League.

The 3-0 win over Villarreal may slightly exaggerate things a little bit—but make no doubt about it, City are here to stay. The team took apart one of the greatest clubs in the world (Manchester United) recently, and it has not taken them long to find their feet in the Champions League.

Sure, they were defeated quite badly on the trip to Bayern Munich, but since then, they have been extremely good.

It has even made Vincent Kompany be extremely bullish regarding their chances of winning the Champions League, although that seems to be quite a long shot even for a side that is scoring for fun.

Manchester City have been scoring more than two goals in most of their matches and it would only be surprising to see them not score any.

The forward lineup consisting of Sergio Aguero and Mario Balotelli, supported by the likes of David Silva and James Milner, provides the attacking threat that can destroy any defence.

People seem to be intent on praising the brilliance of David Silva, but I reckon that it is due to the addition of even more quality in the form of Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri that Silva has been able to perform at this level.

City now have a five-point advantage at the top of the table.

Roberto Mancini will want to spoil Alex Ferguson's 25th-year celebrations at Manchester United by extending the lead even more. If they do so, it will not be long before they become favourites for the title.
