BCS Standings: Overrated Top 25 Teams Who Will Break the BCS

Adam WellsNov 6, 2011

The BCS is always a source of controversy—no matter what the computers say, we are always going to disagree with them, because we have the benefit of actually seeing what teams do on a weekly basis.

That said, there are always going to be overrated teams that sneak into the BCS because of late-season losses or something that the computers see in them that no one else does.

The system claims to follow a formula, but the more we see it in action, the more obvious it is that it is just as confused by the formula as we are.

Keeping that in mind, there are a few overrated teams currently ranked in the top 25 of the BCS Rankings that do not deserve to play in one of the five big games but will get in because the contracts dictate that they must.

Georgia Bulldogs

Thanks to South Carolina’s loss on Saturday night, the Georgia Bulldogs are in the driver’s seat in the SEC East. However, if you look at the schedule that they have played, the idea that they are one of the best teams in the country is ridiculous.

Even for those Georgia loyalists that are quick to point out they have a Top 25 defense, I will point out that since opening the season against Boise State and South Carolina, this team has played one of the softest schedules in the country.

Their best win of the season was against a four-loss Florida team two weeks ago. The SEC East is not very good, and Georgia representing the division in a conference title game does not do it any favors.

Any Team In The Big Ten Legends Division

The Big Ten is often one of the most competitive conferences in the country, and that holds true again this season.

But there are a lot of overrated (Nebraska, Wisconsin) or mediocre (Michigan) teams in the Legends division, and none of those teams actually deserves a shot to play for the conference title.

Even Michigan State, which leads the division, has had its share of struggles this season, including an 18-point loss at Notre Dame and a 21-point loss at Nebraska. The Spartans needed a Hail Mary to beat Wisconsin.

Penn State is clearly the best team in the Big Ten and should not have to go through a conference title game to play in one of the BCS bowls.

Oklahoma Sooners

All preseason we heard about how this Oklahoma team had as much talent as anyone in the country and deserved to sit alongside the big boys in the SEC.

Now, one home loss to Texas Tech and a knee injury to All-American receiver Ryan Broyles, it looks like the Sooners' chances of playing for a National Championship are slim to none.

The one thing that does work in their favor is a match up with Oklahoma State in the final game of the season, but it is going to be hard for the computers to justify putting this team in the National Title game perch.

Oklahoma fans will disagree, but the defense has failed this team more often than not, and it looks like another disappointing—which is a relative term in Norman these days—finish to the season for them.
