Week 9 Fantasy Football Start 'Em, Sit 'Em: Reggie Wayne and WRs You Must Bench

Tim DanielsNov 6, 2011

Making the tough decision to bench a wide receiver that has been in your starting lineup all season can make the difference between winning an important game or losing it. Here are three WRs fantasy football owners should allow to ride the pine in Week 9.

Jordy Nelson, Green Bay Packers

Nelson's performance has been wildly inconsistent this season and that makes him a frustrating player to own. Over the past six games he's alternated between double-digit scores and single-digit ones with the latter costing many owners valuable wins.

His problem is the number of receivers at Aaron Rodgers' disposal. Since the world-class quarterback spreads the ball around so much, it's impossible to tell when Nelson will be productive. Against San Diego's 12th-ranked defense against opposing fantasy WRs, it's better not to take a chance.

Week 9 Projection: five fantasy points

Steve Johnson, Buffalo Bills

Johnson will be stepping onto Revis Island in Week 9 and vacations to that resort rarely end well. Buffalo's No. 1 wideout hasn't scored more than nine points since Week 3, as the Bills have begun to balance out their offense.

It's hard to imagine him garnering many targets in what is likely going to be a ground-and-pound game, and those he does see will be negated by Darrelle Revis. The only hope for Johnson salvaging a good game is if he finds the end zone, and it's not worth risking your week on that.

Week 9 Projection: six fantasy points

Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis Colts

Wayne watched his fantasy value plummet when Peyton Manning went down and it hasn't recovered. He has scored seven points or less in every week since the opener and appears to be No. 3 in the pecking order behind Pierre Garcon and Dallas Clark.

It reached a point where he doesn't even belong in lineups against Atlanta's shaky secondary. If there are any owners in your league that will take him based on name recognition alone, feel free to unload him. Otherwise, keep him on the bench until an injury might boost his value.
