Pacquiao vs. Marquez III: Why a Pac-Man Loss Will Ruin Boxing's Future

Justin WeltonNov 6, 2011

If Manny Pacquiao loses to Juan Manuel Marquez next weekend, it would ruin boxing’s future as we know it.

Of course, boxing would still be around and it would be celebrated by boxing fanatics, but to the casual fan (like me) it would ruin the possibility of the upcoming future. Would Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather really matter if Marquez upsets Pacquiao?

I know I wouldn’t care as much about the fight.

Maybe Marquez and Pacquiao would have a rematch if Marquez wins allowing for this saga to be drawn out for a few more years. Then, maybe, we would never see what everybody wants.

If they were to fight (Manny and Floyd) I wouldn’t care about it. I already know who the better fighter is—Mayweather.

I don’t want to watch a loser of a big match get an opportunity against the best fighter in the world. Pacquiao has to defeat Marquez if boxing wants to be relevant in my eyes.

MMA is already taking over the world and boxing has actually grabbed some of that prestige back in the past few months when Mayweather fought and now Pac-Man, but when those two fighters aren’t in a match, not too many people care. I certainly don’t.

Relate this to LSU and Alabama and the buildup that matchup received. Imagine the buildup for Pac-Man and Mayweather. It would be nuts.

I don’t want to see a match where the loser of the fight gets an opportunity against the best. Boxing would be in major trouble if Pac-Man were to lose, and while I think he’ll come out on top, it still makes me nervous.
