Week 9 Fantasy Football Start Em Sit Em: Joe Flacco and More Star QBs to Bench

Tim DanielsNov 5, 2011

Several big-name quarterbacks have tough matchups in Week 9 and should be benched if fantasy owners have another option at the position. While it's never easy to leave a star QB on the sidelines, the decision could often be the difference between winning or losing a week.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buffalo Bills

Fitzpatrick dominated the first three weeks, but hasn't topped 13 points since, as Buffalo has moved to a more run-oriented offense. Now he goes up against a New York Jets defense that ranks first against opposing fantasy signal callers.

The Jets will be ready for Fitzpatrick's quick passing attack, which has been especially effective on third down. Both teams will attempt to establish the rushing game to control possession, so look for a sub par performance from Fitz Magic.

Week 9 Projection: eight fantasy points

Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers

The next two quarterbacks on this list come from the same game, Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore. Aside from Aaron Rodgers, it would be tough to find a QB playing better than Roethlisberger, who has scored at least 17 points in three of the last four weeks.

He struggled against the Ravens' vaunted defense in Week 1, though, scoring just one point. Just like the Bills and Jets game, both teams will be looking to maintain ball control, hurting the chances either gunslinger has a huge game.

Week 9 Projection: nine fantasy points

Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens

Flacco actually had a good outing in the first game between these two teams with 22 points. However, Pittsburgh's defense hasn't allowed more than 16 points to a QB since, and had a good showing against Tom Brady last week.

It's hard to imagine him matching that season-opening performance, especially on the road. Add in the fact he has totaled 16 points in his last four games and there just aren't enough positive signs to consider playing him against the top-ranked Steelers pass defense.
