Georgia Football: 5 Things We Learned About the Bulldogs Against NM State

Brian JonesNov 5, 2011

After an emotional win against Florida last week, the Bulldogs took care of business and destroyed New Mexico State.

There was no doubt the Bulldogs were going to win the game, but with the Auburn game right around the corner, there was that chance the Bulldogs would overlook the Aggies and not play as well as they should.

But that was not the case as the Bulldogs did a lot of good things and look strong going into the Auburn game next week.

Here are five things to take from the win against the Aggies.

Aaron Murray Continues To Get Better

1 of 5

Aaron Murray did not have a great game against Florida, but made the plays when the Bulldogs needed him the most.

Against the Aggies, Murray achieved a career best with five touchdown passes to five different receivers.

This was the game everyone was waiting for from him. Hopefully, he can build on this because he will have to play just as good to beat Auburn, Kentucky and Georgia Tech.

There's Some Depth at the Running Back Position

2 of 5

The Bulldogs were without their top four running backs, so they had to turn to Brandon Horton and Kyle Karempelis who are two walk-ons.

Horton led the team with 98 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown, and Karempelis was not far behind with 63 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown.

Both backs played well and if they continue to work hard, they will see more time on the field.

Branden Smith and Brandon Boykin Need More Snaps on Offense

3 of 5

Both Branden Smith and Brandon Boykin have been used sparingly on offense throughout the entire season, but they saw more snaps on offense today because of the lack of depth at the running back spot.

Both players scored on offense so, one has to wonder, should they be used more for the rest of the season?

Smith and Boykin are needed on defense, but the offense would be so much better if both players saw 10-15 snaps per game.

We Have Another Emerging Star

4 of 5

We know about Malcolm Mitchell and how he burst onto the scene with his big plays at wide receiver, but there is another young receiver that is looking to be that next big star.

Chris Conley led all receivers in the win against the Aggies with five catches for 126 yards and one touchdown. He also had some big catches against Florida which helped the Bulldogs keep offensive drives going.

Conley has been seeing more snaps because Mitchell has been out with a hamstring injury. When Mitchell returns, don't be surprised if Conley still sees a lot of time on the field.

This Team Is Ready for the Home Stretch

5 of 5

With the way the Bulldogs played today, they are ready to face their last two SEC opponents as well as their arch rival Georgia Tech.

The Bulldogs are playing with a level of confidence that wasn't seen last year. They feel like they can play with anybody and if they continue to get better, they'll feel like they have a chance to win the SEC title.

They still have flaws that have to be fixed, but they have taken major steps forward and the fans are loving the way their team is playing right now.
