Michigan Football: Iowa Upset Proves Denard Robinson Isn't a Real QB

Andrew KulhaNov 5, 2011

Denard Robinson is not a legitimate quarterback, and it's time for the Michigan Wolverines to accept that fact.

He's a great athlete, a great runner and a great leader, but a quarterback he is not.

If you've been waiting for the sure sign of this statement to arrive before coming to that conclusion, look no further than the Wolverines 24-16 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Simply put, Robinson was embarrassing as a quarterback.

One could argue the fact that Robinson led them down the field and put them in a position to tie the game, but I urge you to understand this point:

If Robinson was even just an average quarterback, the Wolverines wouldn't have been in that position.

If Robinson connected on just half of his misses Michigan would have had the edge in this game.

Iowa couldn't stop the Wolverines receivers, and Fitzgerald Toussaint was running like a real running back, which is something Michigan hasn't seen for quite a while.

Michigan's offense had Robinson set up for success against the Hawkeyes, but he threw it away, literally.

Robinson finished the day going an abysmal 17-of-37 with 194 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, but even those numbers don't tell the whole story.

They don't describe how Robinson missed wide-open receivers by yards, not just inches. There were times where his deep balls flew over defender and receiver by at least five yards in every direction.

He had zero accuracy, and in the end that's what cost the Wolverines. Robinson had receivers open for touchdowns on more than one occasion, but he simply just missed.

Moving forward it's time to understand that Robinson isn't a quarterback, and he is best suited running the ball.

We've seen coach Brady Hoke look to sophomore quarterback Devin Gardner more and more as the season progresses, and that's a trend that needs to continue.

Denard Robinson isn't a real quarterback. We've seen that fact exposed two years in a row now once the Wolverines hit the meat of their Big Ten schedule.

Sure, it's easy for him to look like a Heisman candidate against Eastern Michigan or Western, but when it comes to the real games against real opponents, Robinson doesn't have the necessary skills to win a game from under center.

You can argue it, disbelieve it or simply choose to ignore it, but in the end it's Robinson himself who proves the point.

He's not a real quarterback, and it's time for the Wolverines to move on from that thought before it's too late.
