Big East Expansion Is Turning into an Exciting Thing to Watch

Martin SondermannNov 5, 2011

So many people want to write the Big East Conference off. A few weeks ago they might have even been correct in their verbal assaults.

However, you might want to keep the fat lady off the stage and tell her to hold off on singing, because the Big East just might become more than anyone ever expected.

Already an impressive basketball conference, the Big East is about to become a very solid football conference as well.

With the additions of Boise State, Houston, SMU, Air Force, Navy, Central Florida, and possibly BYU, the Big East is about to gobble up television sets and recruiting markets while providing interesting and fresh cross-country match-ups.

Add to the intrigue the possibility of adding Notre Dame, Memphis, and/or Temple, and you have one of the most exciting news generators in the country.

While Notre Dame might be a stretch, if special accommodations were made for the Irish to join the conference, perhaps they might consider it.

The Big East was never willing to do that before, but in today's climate, members of the conference might be willing to bend over backwards to make that happen.

As far as Memphis and Temple are concerned, these are two premier basketball schools, but they would add even more depth to an exciting new Big East.

With every other major BCS conference locked into their television contracts for some time to come, the new Big East is sitting pretty to land a very good deal.

The freedom to do things a bit different—or very differently for that matter—has put the Big East in a better position than anyone saw coming.

The haters, naysayers, and doubters, all have their opinions. However, none of their words will matter in the end.
