2011 Breeders' Cup Field: Goldikova Looks To Make History in Mile

Michael MillNov 5, 2011

The most anticipated race in the 2011 Breeders' Cup is the Classic. Today, however, there will be special attention paid when the running of the Turf Mile occurs.

Goldikova will enter the final race of her illustrious career this afternoon and will have the chance to end it in historic fashion.

Goldikova is the winner of the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Breeders' Cup Mile races.

She enters the race as a 7-5 early-morning favorite. She also has the early advantage of taking the No. 1 post position.

Goldikova is 17-6-2 in her 26 career starts. She only failed to place once over the course of her career.

She enters the race with a 2-3-0 record in 2011.

This race has such a historic meaning that it has been moved to the 6:07 p.m. post time—just before the Classic takes place.

The field will be full of difficulties and obstacles for Goldikova to face. Grade I winners Get Stormy and Sidney's Candy will be participating in the race.

Gio Ponti, who finished second in last year's Mile, and Courageous Cat, the 2009 Mile runner-up, will also be in the race.

Gio Ponti and Courageous Cat are the two competitors that are expected to really give Goldikova a run for the money.

If she can pull off the victory, Goldikova will have won the race for four consecutive years. It will be the only time in the history of the Breeders' Cup that a horse has won four consecutive races.

We could be watching records being set this afternoon.
