LSU Football Recruiting 2012: 5 Recruits Who Could Give Tigers No. 1 Class

Edwin WeathersbyNov 4, 2011

LSU faces a tough challenge Saturday night in Tuscaloosa as their national title hopes are on the line against Alabama. It's also a huge recruiting weekend for the Tide, and many of the prospects who will be on the sidelines are also considering LSU.

For this read, I'm going to give you five recruits that could give the Tigers' a top 10 recruiting class, perhaps the No.1 class come signing day.

Let's Geaux!

5. Tracy Howard, CB

1 of 5

Howard is the top CB prospect available in the country right now and has told Scout.com that Tiger coach Billy Gonzales is recruiting him extremely hard.

LSU will get an official visit from Howard in the coming months, so expect to hear him being in Baton Rouge soon. Interestingly enough, Howard is also looking at Alabama, while visiting West Virginia recently and considering USC, Miami, Florida State, Notre Dame, Florida and UCLA as well.

Tiger fans, you want another Morris Claiborne? Another Honey Badger? Howard could be in their class.

4. Channing Ward, DE

2 of 5

Ward lists his main schools of interest as Alabama, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and LSU. He has already visited Baton Rouge and is keen to the Tiger program.

A 6'4", 240-pound edge defender, Ward is a hot commodity on the recruiting circuit in the SEC. LSU looks good right now, but 'Bama is thick in the race and Ward loves the idea of staying in-state in the Magnolia State.

Ward likely won't be deciding until close to National Signing Day.

3. Kwon Alexander, LB

3 of 5

Alexander is the top OLB prospect in the country; if it weren't for a torn ACL, he would have received national defensive player of the year consideration. At 6'2", 210-pounds, his play speed, range and athleticism are off the charts.

He lists a top five of Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Oregon and Florida State. Alexander took his first trip to Baton Rouge a few weeks ago and liked his time there.

He will take trips to the remaining four on his final list and decide on NSD.

2. Landon Collins, DB/OLB

4 of 5

Collins is a strong safety/rover type that hits like a truck and can cover with great range. He's the biggest name that will be at the game tomorrow as far as recruiting goes, because he is seriously considering both LSU and Alabama.

Texas has also made late surge.

However, he's a Bayou native, and LSU's campus is basically down the street from his hometown of Geismar. The best in the Louisiana, Collins is a must-get for the Tigers.

1. Mario Edwards, DE

5 of 5

I know, this one is a shocker. But, although Edwards is committed to Florida State, he says he is still looking around.

LSU and Oklahoma are two schools, he says, that stand out to him, so the Tigers do have a good chance to pry him away from the Seminoles.

Viewed as the No.1 DE in the country and ESPNU's top overall player, Edwards would be a mega-sized coup should LSU get him to sign with them.
