Notre Dame Football: Wake Forest Game Is Good Test for Huge Stanford Matchup

T.J. McaloonNov 3, 2011

Notre Dame’s season has been one big roller coaster. It wasn’t even a roller coaster that starts out with a huge uphill climb. Instead it was one of those that starts out with a huge drop off that sends you screaming as your car goes racing down the hill.

But, just like those roller coasters, after that initial drop off you have to make the slow climb. As Notre Dame’s season started to climb after four straight wins. The wins sent this Irish fan base back into hope that everything was alright.

Then whoosh, the season took another alarming drop after the USC game, as the Irish reached the apex of the hill after the Air Force game. The night game against the Trojans sent the Irish into another drop off and whipped the fan base around a turn that led them back up another hill, which was the crushing victory against Navy.

Now, as this team is coming to another big game against Wake Forest, this Irish team can either continue up another hill or they can come right back down, whipping through another corner as they head into the Maryland home game.

Though it is very unlikely this Irish team will make that steep of a drop off against the Demon Deacons this week.

Yet, the Irish should not take this Wake Forest team lightly. Yes, Wake Forest’s program is not at the same level historically as USC, Michigan and Michigan State, but that does not mean they should be taken lightly.

This Wake Forest team is the best measuring stick as to if this Notre Dame team has fixed whatever problems that plagued them in their two losses to good passing attacks in South Florida and USC.

Wake Forest is not as good as Stanford. Heck, no team in college football has the same quality quarterback as Stanford’s Andrew Luck.

But, a dominant win against Wake Forest, where the Irish defense can keep the Demon Deacons passing attack in check, will give them the momentum that they can be successful against the Cardinal passing attack.

A great performance against Wake Forest this weekend will keep this Notre Dame train going back up the hill toward the Stanford game on Nov. 26th.

That will be the game where this Irish team will either take their next big fall down the hill toward their bowl game or have a breakthrough victory that defines a new coaching regime in Brian Kelly.

It’s been quite the season so far, hopefully you’ve enjoyed the ride.
