Fantasy Football Week 9: Superstar QBs Guaranteed to Hurt Your Team

Adam WellsNov 3, 2011

There is a saying in sports that says "superstars win championships." It is not always used when describing NFL teams, because the narrative of the scrappy little group that comes out of nowhere is so much better, but it does hold true in fantasy football.

The beauty of fantasy football is that it is much easier to get a superstar on your team than it is in reality. However, that does not mean that you can plug them into your starting lineup week after week and have nothing to worry about.

Just look at some of the matchups that superstar quarterbacks have in Week 9. There are a few players that are usually locks to post big numbers, but they will have a difficult time finding their rhythm this week because they are either not playing well or they have a bad matchup.

Here are the three quarterbacks that are going to hurt your fantasy team a lot more than help this week.

Michael Vick

The Philadelphia Eagles are winning games thanks in large part to LeSean McCoy. He has made life so much easier on everyone else in the offense that he should merit some consideration for the MVP award.

Michael Vick has had a good season in his own right, but he hasn’t been the dynamic force that everyone expected him to be. He has just 11 touchdown passes to eight interceptions.

The Bears defense has gotten better in recent weeks, particularly the front seven, and the Eagles offensive line is still not very good.

Vick is going to be forced to throw on the run, which will hurt his accuracy and lead to a lot of turnovers. He has the ability to run, which makes him more attractive, but his passing will hurt his value this week.

After starting the season on fire, Drew Brees has started to show signs of regression. He was turnover prone in 2010, with 22 interceptions, and he has the second-most in the NFL this year (10).

The Buccaneers have already beaten the Saints this season in Week 6, and they picked Brees off three times in that game.

I know the Buccaneers defense gives up a lot of yards to opposing quarterbacks—268 per game—but when they are getting turnovers, it doesn’t matter what else Brees does.

I know that Big Ben is hot right now, but he has not exactly been picking apart the strongest defenses in the NFL. He has thrown for 726 yards and five touchdowns in the last two weeks against Arizona and New England.

Roethlisberger and the Steelers will get a wake-up call this week against Baltimore. These games are always close, and there is not a lot of scoring because the defenses on both sides are so strong.

No one on either offense is going to have a particularly effective game, so you would be best served to go with Plan B when setting your fantasy roster this week.
