2011 Breeders Cup: Post Position Will Be Favorable for Uncle Mo
Most good horse handicappers will tell you that the post position doesn't matter all that much in mile and a quarter races, but odds favorite Uncle Mo certainly won't be complaining about his.
Granted, a horse can't physically complain like a human can, but I can imagine Uncle Mo's camp is pretty happy with their position.
They aren't the only team that looks to have a favorable position with a favorable horse. Widely regarded No. 2 Havre de Grace, who is a philly mind you, also has a good post position.
It looks as if the two top-runners will have no excuses to hold them back this year, according to a report from Ed McNamara of newsday.com:
"The 3-year-old colt Uncle Mo, the 5-2 morning-line favorite, and the 4-year-old filly Havre de Grace, the 3-1 second choice, drew posts 12 and 10, respectively, in a field of 13. Provided their mounts break cleanly, the quarter-mile run to the first turn will allow John Velazquez, riding Uncle Mo, and Ramon Dominguez, on Havre de Grace, to stalk likely pacesetter Game On Dude (post 8).
Nassau County resident Mike Repole owns Classic contenders Uncle Mo, last year's 2-year-old champion, and Travers winner Stay Thirsty (post 9). In an email to Newsday, Repole said: "Couldn't be happier. Didn't want post 1. Wanted Mo outside of Game On Dude, and Thirsty got his lucky Travers number 9."
"
If you're looking for Uncle Mo to take the cake in this race, this would be a good first step. While the race is long enough for the horses to make their own way, Uncle Mo is going to have the outside route and will be able to draft off the other horses.
While anything can happen, this is certainly yet another advantage for the horse that many expect to take it all at Saturday's $5 million Breeder's Cup Classic at the famous Churchill Downs.
