BCS Rankings: Alabama, Kansas State and Teams in Week 10 Must-Win Situations
Every college football team knows they must win in order to compete in the BCS, but some teams need a victory much more than others in Week 10.
The 2011 college football season has been nothing short of amazing, and Saturday's games feature some very intriguing matchups.
Since the computers control all, winning every week is very important, especially against a ranked opponent.
Here are a few teams in must-win situations in Week 10.
No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama
The biggest game of the year takes place Saturday night, as the top two teams in the country square off. Both teams need to win this weekend, which is what makes this game so great.
Very rarely do the No. 1 and No. 2 teams meet in the regular season. Saturday's game is very likely to determine who wins the SEC West, as well as who plays for the BCS National Title game.
It's no secret that these are the best two teams in the country right now, and many people believe that no matter what happens the rest of the season Alabama and LSU should meet again for the title game.
However, George Schroeder of The Register-Guard tweeted his opinion on it, and he's not the only one who feels that way.
I don't believe these two teams will meet again this season because there will be another undefeated team in the BCS, which almost always trumps a one loss team, even if that team's one loss comes at the hands of the No. 1 team.
Let's face it—the winner of this game is going to win out and stay atop all the polls for the remainder of the season.
Both the Crimson Tide and the Tigers know that their season rests on Saturday's game. For the winner, the quest for a national title gets increasingly closer, but the loser will need a ton of luck on their side to be considered for the title game.
No. 14 Kansas State
The Wildcats were off to a hot start in part because of an easy schedule, but they really need to avoid their second straight loss this Saturday.
Kansas State suffered its first loss of the year last week when the Oklahoma Sooners blew them out, and now they have the difficult task of playing at Oklahoma State.
The Cowboys happen to have one of the most high-powered offenses in the country, ranking second in the nation in scoring.
If the Wildcats wish to stay in the BCS hunt, they have to win on Saturday. It's not going to be easy at all because the Cowboys are outscoring their opponents 399-212.
No. 9 South Carolina
The Gamecocks still control their own destiny in the SEC East, and if they wish to repeat as division champs, they have to beat the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday.
South Carolina has one SEC game remaining after Saturday, and if they win out then they will win the division. However, should they lose then the favorites to win the SEC East will be the Georgia Bulldogs.
Georgia will need to win out as well, but they don't have to face anyone near as difficult as Arkansas. I'd give the Gamecocks the edge if they were playing at home, but because Saturday's game is in Arkansas, South Carolina is going to have a very tough time.
The Gamecocks were unable to dominate the Tennessee Volunteers on the road last week, but they did do a good job of chewing up the clock, which was pointed out by Beth Rucker, who covers the Vols for the Associated Press.
The best way for South Carolina to win is to keep the Razorbacks passing attack off the field, which means a heavy dose of the ground and pound will get the job done. That won't be very easy without Marcus Lattimore.
South Carolina's season rests on Saturday's game, and the fact that the Razorbacks have struggled against Ole Miss and Vanderbilt in the last two weeks certainly gives Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks great confidence for Saturday.
Other teams in must-win situations on Saturday are Michigan at Iowa and Oklahoma vs. Texas A&M. Both Michigan and Oklahoma can't afford to lose anymore games this season, especially to unranked teams.
