NFL Week 9 Predictions: Projecting the Top Air and Ground Players of the Week

John RozumNov 3, 2011

Regardless of the opponent, for any player to come out of a week where they miraculously performed is a huge confidence booster.

It begins to build momentum and can ultimately become the catalyst that sparks some positive energy, provided the team was coming off a loss or just needed some added motivation.

In any event, here are the top offensive performers in Week 9.

Passing

QB Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons (at Indianapolis Colts)

It's no secret that the Atlanta Falcons haven't been playing up to par through this point, at least in comparison to 2010. However, the Falcons get the Colts on the road this week and it's another winnable game.

Aside from Indy's winless record, they do play much better at home, so this will by no means be a cakewalk and Atlanta has been vulnerable to struggling on the road. That said, Ryan has his breakout game of 2011 against the NFL's No. 22 ranked pass defense.

Ryan's been gradually improving since Week 1 where he failed to throw a TD, and with too many injuries, a lack of talent and confidence, the Colts simply aren't good enough to slow him down.

Projection: 350 pass yards, three TDs.

Rushing

RB Fred Jackson, Buffalo Bills (vs. New York Jets)

It's a crucial divisional game between Buffalo and New York of the AFC East in Week 9, and both are only separated by one game.

But, the difference in this game will be Bills RB Fred Jackson. The Jets may have a stout pass defense, however, Buffalo is a multidimensional and dynamic offense that can move the ball any which way. And Jackson is the main focus, despite being underrated.

He's averaging over 100 yards per game and the Jets allow an average of almost 130 rush yards per game. Advantage: Buffalo. And not only do they control the clock, but Jackson is the week's leading rush en route to another "W" for the Bills.

Projection: 140 rush yards, two TDs.

Receiving

WR Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals (vs. St. Louis Rams)

Unfortunately for Larry Fitzgerald, the Arizona Cardinals are just 1-6 and virtually have no chance at catching San Francisco for the NFC West title.

That said, not only do the Cardinals get win No. 2 this week, but it's a divisional victory over St. Louis where Fitz dominates all game long. He's by far the best player on the field and the Rams don't have anyone who can match his athletic prowess.

All Kevin Kolb needs is 1.5 seconds to get the snap and then put it up, because when it comes down, Larry's Venus Flytrap grasp will snatch it away from defenders.

Projection: Seven catches, 120 yards, two TDs.
