Jeremy Mayfield's love for speed is ruining his life. It is that same love that drove him to become a NASCAR driver, and the same love that has led to an apparently destructive addiction to methamphetamine.

Recent Incident

Jeremy Mayfield was arrested Tuesday night at his West Virginia home.

The Associated Press reported:

"Mayfield was arrested Tuesday night and charged with possessing 1.5 grams of meth, according to records from the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office. Mayfield, 42, posted $3,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in district court on Wednesday."

As details come to light, it appears that possession of meth was not the only legal problem Mayfield will be facing.

NASCAR Suspension

In 2009, Mayfield failed a random NASCAR drug test, which NASCAR later revealed was positive for meth.

Mayfield appealed the decision, and eventually lost. He has not returned to racing since.

Details from Suspension Appeal

As ESPN reported, during the trial "Mayfield's estranged former stepmother offered sworn testimony that she had witnessed the driver use methamphetamines at least 30 times and that he'd cooked the drug himself until it became too difficult to obtain the ingredients.

"Mayfield angrily denied her accusations, and accused NASCAR of paying Lisa Mayfield to lie about him because she was angry he had not given her financial help since his father's 2007 death."

With a mountain of evidence pointing to the fact that Mayfield's assertion that he has never used meth was not factual, it is nearly impossible to believe those claims.

And whether he is using or not, it is clear that Mayfield is caught in a downward spiral. And a spiral like that only ends two ways: a complete change in lifestyle from the person, or death.

Here's hoping Jeremy Mayfield can find his way to the first option.
