Terrell Owens: Why an All-Time Great Will Never Play in the NFL Again

Mike MoraitisNov 2, 2011

When it's all said and done, Terrell Owens will go down as one of the greatest receivers of all-time.

Despite his negative public persona and team-killing ability, statistically you can't deny his place in NFL history. No matter how hard you try.

Even his season in 2010 showed he still has potential to be a great receiver if given the chance.

T.O. also holds another "distinguished" honor as being one of the worst teammates in NFL history.

Whether it's questioning a quarterback's sexual preference, doing sit-ups in his driveway on national television, or shedding tears in a ridiculous display of public crying, there are a million reasons not to like him.

And it appears teams in the NFL are as sick of T.O. and his end zone celebrations as we are. After a dismal showing at Owens' personal workout, no team in the NFL has even offered him a contract.

Has Owens finally gotten to the point that nobody will sign him despite his ability to help a team? I do say "help a team" quite cautiously because that depends upon T.O. to put the team over himself, which never happens.

Now with the issue arising of an alleged attempted suicide by the former 49ers' great, Owens' already questionable mindset is up for more scrutiny.

The more you unravel about Owens, the more you begin to understand why only the Chicago Rush of the AFL want to sign him. That is, of course, the Arena Football League and it's only for publicity, not talent.

It appears the sideshow that T.O. has created over the years has finally become the reality of his career and there is no team in the NFL ready to deal with that.

For that, he has nobody to blame but himself.

It just goes to show you, no matter how much talent you have, if you always put yourself over the team, nobody will want you. Talk about an after-school special for young athletes.

Some NFL teams normally will sign a player if they will help the team win, regardless of how troublesome that player might be on or off the field.

In my mind, T.O. still has that ability, but it doesn't seem to be worth the risk.

So where does that leave Owens?

A catastrophic receiver-injury away from possibly getting a chance with some NFL team. Dwindle that field down even less considering only a playoff team would necessarily need to make that move.

I just don't see any scenario, other than a drastic one, where T.O. will ever get another opportunity to play in the National Football League again.

And I'm sure we'll all miss him.
