WWE Survivor Series 2011: Why the Miz and R-Truth Are Already Dead in the Water

Erik BeastonNov 2, 2011

The main event of the 2011 edition of the Survivor Series pay-per-view will see the return of The Rock as he teams with John Cena to meet the duo of R-Truth and former WWE Champion, The Miz.

It is a major happening, the first time The Rock has stepped foot inside a WWE ring for an advertised match in seven years. The fact that he is teaming with John Cena, this generation’s biggest star and his opponent, in what will be a monumental main event at Wrestlemania, should create intrigue and excitement within the WWE fan base.

It has not.

Somewhere along the line, the creative team apparently forgot that The Rock and John Cena are just one-half of the main event of the big four pay-per-view event. Since their victory at Vengeance over Triple H and CM Punk, The Miz and R-Truth have been booked in an unbelievable manner.  No fan in their right mind would ever believe they have a shot at defeating Captain America and the Scorpion King.

The night following the Vengeance pay-per-view, Cena would have beaten both men by himself, in a handicap match, had it not been for Truth getting his team disqualification. This past Monday, John Cena did not just defeat The Miz, despite interference from R-Truth, he did not just destroy Truth post-match, he made a mockery out of both men.

In any story, the hero or heroes are only as good as the villains they have to conquer. That has long been a criticism of John Cena. No one believes that any of the villains to his hero are worthy enough, because they are booked so poorly, with multiple losses in a row, when fighting Cena. Miz and R-Truth are simply the flavor of the month, two moderately-over heels that can serve the purpose of providing a competitive, entertaining match, but in the long run, are no match for their Super Team opponents.

Unless there are sharp changes in the booking of this program, with Miz and Truth gaining some sort of credibility with the fans, through convincing wins over top talents, including Cena, then the match will be a failure and the buy-rate for the pay-per-view will fail to live up to expectations. Ultimately, The Rock’s in-ring return months prior to Wrestlemania 28 will be for naught.
