NFL Power Rankings Week 9: Terrible Teams That Don't Deserve Their Rank

Donald WoodNov 2, 2011

The 2011 NFL season is chugging along and it’s time to get a grip before it gets too far into the season and there is no time to enjoy it.

After a tumultuous week in terms of power rankings being shifted, there are teams too high that aren’t nearly as good as their record and rank indicates.

The following teams are terrible and are positioned nowhere near where they will finish the season.

No. 2 San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have a stellar defense and a potent running game, and that’s exactly what you need to be a serious contender in the playoffs.

But all is not what it seems in San Fran.

While the run defense is solid, the secondary of the 49ers is overrated and mediocre at best, and until Alex Smith is not under center, San Francisco will never be a serious contender for anything but a weak division title and a first-round playoff loss.

No. 5 New York Giants

The New York Giants have had a cake walk to start the season, and now the upcoming schedule will be one of the toughest in the entire NFL.

The Giants have capitalized on a weak NFC east early on, but the emergence of the Philadelphia Eagles as a powerhouse will expose the Giants as the frauds they are.

New York has a good chance they will lose four of the next six games, and if they can’t manage to keep it together, they’ll be looking in on the playoffs from the outside again this season.

No. 14 Tennessee Titans

The lack of a run game this season has cost the Tennessee Titans any shred of credibility they were hoping to obtain by signing Matt Hasselbeck.

Chris Johnson was supposed to be the savior of the franchise, and the fact that he has been held to just over 300 yards rushing this season shows just how bad things have gotten.

The defense can be as good as it wants to be, but if the offense can’t put points on the board then they won’t be very high on this list for long.

1. Green Bay Packers (7-0)
2. San Francisco 49ers (6-1)
