Green Bay Packers Select with the 32nd Pick of the 2012 NFL Draft...

Derek HornerNov 1, 2011

Green Bay Packers fans and most NFL fans agree that the Packers will likely win the Super Bowl this season.  Assuming they have the 32nd pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, who will they select for a team that seems nearly perfect?

Most would agree that the Packers are looking to upgrade their defense.  However, there is the chance a lightning playmaker could fall to them at the 32nd pick.  If so, do the Packers choose to address their needs or upgrade a position of less need, but one where a playmaker could take them to the next level?

With the 32nd pick, here are the likely candidates to be available for Green Bay.

Runningbacks

If LaMichael James and Cyrus Gray are available, could the Packers fill their backfield with more youth and let go of some of the veterans?  The Packers tend to like powerful backs, but James and Gray could provide the burst of playmaking ability Green Bay could use in their rushing game.

Before his injury, James was very productive for the Oregon Ducks with his explosive burst and exceptional quickness.  Gray is a little larger than James and closer to the type of back the Packers are used to.  If they choose to supplement their current stable, will they take James or Gray?

Outside Linebackers

Nigel Bradham, Zach Brown, and Travis Lewis could be viable picks for the outside linebacker position if they fall to the 32nd pick.  Bradham is a speedster on the outside from Florida State, while Zach Brown adds similar capabilities.  On the other hand, Travis Lewis from Oklahoma is a hybrid outside linebacker who can play outside or step up to the line and blitz from the edge.

Will Green Bay seek another outside linebacker to mirror Clay Matthews?

Cornerbacks

There are a plethora of cornerbacks available in this year's draft, and Green Bay's secondary is aging.  How many years does Charles Woodson have left?

There are many teams looking to upgrade their secondaries this year, but sufficient talent should remain by the last pick of the first round.  If Nebraska's Alfonzo Dennard or former Florida corner Janoris Jenkins are available, the Packers have to take them.

If, however, Green Bay has to look at the fourth or fifth options at cornerback, they'll have a dilemma.  They could look at Virginia Tech's Jayron Hosley to upgrade cornerback, while adding a skilled returner.  Or, the Packers could turn to Oregon's Cliff Harris who was suspended for the first half of the 2011 season.  It's likely Harris will be devalued due to his off-field issues, but resolving those could mean a steal for the Packers.

Concluding Thoughts

Three positions hold very valuable talent for the Green Bay Packers at the last pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.  Which direction will they go?  Adding explosion in the backfield would be the Packers' best bet with LaMichael James, otherwise they should take the best available between cornerback and outside linebacker.
