Arizona State Football: Ranking the Sun Devils Uniform Combinations This Season

This is the first season the Arizona State Sun Devils have ditched their traditional uniforms for the new wave of Nike's highly customizable product line. (Yes, everyone is jumping on the Oregon bandwagon.)

With the transition, the Sun Devils have made many changes. For one, they added new colors and increased the usage of white. While doing so, they also dropped the Sparky logo for the new shiny pitchfork logo. The latter has been more of the debate topic with fans and alumni.

Whether you love the new uniforms or hate them, they are at least working for the Sun Devils, as they are at 6-2 at this point in the season. The Sun Devils have brought a new style to their game, and they seem to be making the leap to becoming one of the better teams in college football. In addition to that, they also have certainly become one of the better dressed teams as well.

After eight games, here is how the Sun Devils' new uniform combinations rank with one another.

8. Does This Match?

These uniforms didn't seem to make much sense. This was Arizona State's game against Pac-12 opponent Oregon State in Week 5.

Why didn't these work?

Perhaps it is because fans are so accustomed to the either all maroon or maroon and gold, but the maroon jersey with white pants and helmets just didn't seem to mesh well.

Perhaps it will grow on fans, but for now these uniforms were not the best showing of the Sun Devils' new uniforms.

7. A New Road Classic

The Sun Devils have always worn white and maroon, but never have they looked as cool as they did against the Oregon Ducks in Week 8.

The white jersey with maroon pants and helmets were not flashy, but they looked great together. The Sun Devils were going up against the top dogs when it comes uniform combinations, so they were going to have a tough job surpassing the Ducks on the field.

Honestly, the Sun Devils looked better. The Ducks' helmets were very cool. The carbon fiber is unique, but the grey uniforms don't make sense, since they are not the school's colors.

6. Road Classic

How can anyone complain with the Sun Devils' classic road white and gold uniforms?

The Sun Devils were traveling into Utah for Week 7, and they did so in traditional fashion. The uniforms were classics with a touch of something new. This will likely be the uniform that the Sun Devils will wear most on the road since it signifies tradition with the color scheme.

5. Fancy, Fancy

All white. Head to toe. Wow, talk about a recipe for disaster for whoever does the team's laundry.

Despite the sympathy for the their uniform cleaner, these uniforms were very clean. The Sun Devils were on the road for the first time at Illinois.

This was the introduction of the Sun Devils' new white helmets, and they were very cool. The white base with the new new maroon and gold decal looks very futuristic, and it will likely be a favorite of the Sun Devil faithful for years.

4. All Maroon

Coming off of their Week 3 loss to Illinois when the Sun Devils sported all white, they came out in Week 4 against USC in all maroon. While both uniforms are sick in their head-to-toe same color scheme, these stood out more because maroon emphasizes Arizona State.

This was another uniform that brought out the throwback uniform with a new taste of something new. The Sun Devils will likely wear these when they play a big Pac-12 opponent at home, as they did against the Trojans.

3. Black and Yellow, Black and Yellow

In Week 10, the Sun Devils once again busted out the black jerseys. Only this time, they combined them with a black helmet and gold pants. It was a quite game, as the Sun Devils were playing Colorado, one of the bottom feeders of the Pac-12.

While the Sun Devils handed them a huge loss, they also did it looking good.

The black uniforms will not be used often, but these alternates are going to be welcomed whenever the team busts them out.

2. Tradition

This is the all-time classic. The maroon jerseys and the gold pants. There is nothing that fans love more then the classic. It is like a throwback, but isn't because it has always been tradition for the Sun Devils.

One would imagine that this will be the most worn uniform by the Sun Devils for many seasons to come. Although it hasn't been the Sun Devils' best uniform thus far this season, it will always be one of the jerseys that fans will always be happy to see on Saturday at Sun Devil Stadium.

1. Black Out

After all the hype with the first ever Arizona State black out game, it certainly came through with flying colors. The uniforms were slick and the crowd was all there. There were over 70,000 who attended the game, by far the most this season. It was only Week 2 and Sun Devil fans were high on their hopes, especially going into a matchup up against then ranked No. 21 Missouri. It had even more fans in attendance then the USC game.

The all blacks are likely not popular with older alumni, but in the end, the jerseys are new and they bring a new unique image to a Sun Devil team that was in much need of an uplifting.
