Julian Edelman Arraigned, What Does This Mean for New England Patriots WR?

Eric BowmanNov 1, 2011

Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots have some decisions to make in regards to recent news involving one of their speedy receivers, Julian Edelman.

According to the Boston Globethe Patriots wide receiver will be arraigned today on charges of indecent assault and battery.

There wasn't a whole lot of information about Edelman's arrest, but don't be surprised if he isn't a member of the Patriots much longer.

With the Patriots moving to a tight end focused offense, Edelman's services aren't really needed anyway. He's been a solid backup, and nothing else.

Once believed to be the next Wes Welker, Edelman has three receptions on the year for 25 yards. His last catch came on October 2 against the Oakland Raiders

The third year receiver out of Kent State isn't a valuable piece of the Patriots offense right now, and this incident doesn't help his chances of staying on the team.

Edelman would only be worthy to the Patriots should something happen to Welker. Despite Welker's previous injuries, he still returns punts, which is basically all Edelman excels at.

Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski have taken over the Patriots offense, and when things are working well teams tend not to switch it up.

That means less action for Edelman this season, but now that he's facing serious charges, the Patriots are likely to do that smart thing and dump him.

Does this means he ends up elsewhere? That remains to be seen, but it all depends on what punishment NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wishes to enforce.

UPDATE: 10:25 a.m. ET

The Boston Herald is reporting that Edelman sexually assaulted a woman in a bar.

"

A police report on the bust states Edelman "reached under" a woman’s party costume and grabbed her between the legs.

A male witness told police he watched as the alleged victim’s face changed into "an expression of shock" at the time of the reported sexual assault.

"

This makes matter worse for Edelman. It also prompted several reactions on Twitter, but perhaps the best came from Peyton's Head.

That costume is usually reserved for regular NFL fans, but Edelman decided he wanted to make the news off the field. Not a smart move, and he will pay the price for it, especially since there's a prominent witness, and he isn't a well known athlete.
