Manny Pacquiao Will Prove Muscle Doesn't Win Fights

Donald WoodNov 1, 2011

Juan Manuel Marquez is as strong as he has ever been for a fight, but Manny Pacquiao and his team think the added muscle isn’t a good thing for this fight.

With both men predicated on speed in their approach to boxing, the hope from the Pac-Man camp is that Marquez has spent so much time bulking up that the increased muscle will slow the veteran down.

There is no doubt that the extra muscle will add power to his punches, but if he is slower than before, Manny will have him where he wants him.

Pacquiao's strength and conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, told GMA News about Marquez’s preparation for this fight:

"

"I would never get my guy that big that fast because you never know how they're going to respond to carrying that kind of weight when it comes to a fight."

"Muscles don't win fights."

"So what's the option, come in there as big as you can, as strong as you can, bang it out as hard as you can for three rounds, hopefully, catch him cold and get lucky, because outside of that, you're not going to beat him (Pacquiao). You're not going to beat him any other way."

"

Pac-Man is one of the hardest punchers in boxing, and his power is only surpassed by his blinding speed. Marquez knows this all too well, and that’s why he is training the way he has over the last few months.

Boxing is a fickle sport, and it’s one of the few sports in the world for which training too much can hurt more than not training enough. That is what Marquez is doing right now.

The idea from the Marquez camp is that he needs to knock Pacquiao out cold in the first three rounds or have to endure the worst beating of his life at the hands of the much improved Pacquiao.

Whatever the plan, Pac-Man’s ready for it.
