2012 NFL Draft: Who's Hot, Who's Not at Wide Receiver

Daniel O'BrienNov 1, 2011

With the first two months of the college football season behind us, the best NFL wide receiver prospects are separating themselves from the rest of the pack.

Some receivers such as Ryan Broyles and Juron Criner have been unstoppable as of late, and their draft positioning is looking better than ever.

Other quality prospects have failed to meet expectations, and they will need to have big Novembers in order to reverse their falling draft stock.

Which collegiate wideouts are giving their best auditions for the spring draft? Which pass catchers are struggling? Here's a list of who's hot and who's not.

Hot: Ryan Broyles, Oklahoma Sooners

1 of 7

In six of the Oklahoma Sooners' eight games, wide out Ryan Broyles has racked up more than 100 receiving yards.

He's also had three multi-touchdown games, and on Saturday against Kansas State he had 14 catches and 171 yards to go along with a touchdown.

If those numbers don't impress NFL teams, then I don't know what will.

Broyles is undersized, but he's extremely quick and agile, which helps him get separation as a great target. Then he uses those same attributes to gain huge chunks of yarrds after the catch.

Not Hot: Nick Toon, Wisconsin Badgers

2 of 7

Nick Toon hasn't hurt his draft stock this year, but his last couple games are definitely ones he'll want to forget.

In a close loss to Michigan State two weeks ago, Toon caught just two passes and wasn't much of a factor for the Wisconsin offense.

In Saturday's disappointing loss to Ohio State, Toon managed three catches for 39 yards.

Granted, it's not all his fault; Wisconsin is a run-heavy team. But in an offense such as that of the Badgers', Toon needs to become a better target if he wants to move up the draft boards.

Hot: Mohamed Sanu, Rutgers Scarlet Knights

3 of 7

Mohamed Sanu has emerged as arguably the best receiver in the Big East this season.

His outstanding play this season could earn him first round consideration in the draft. He's had four different games with more than 10 catches and 100 yards receiving.

Sanu doesn't have elite athleticism, but he's still physically impressive his skills are polished—he's so skilled that it looks like he will earn himself a decent payday this spring.

Not Hot: Jeff Fuller, Texas A&M Aggies

4 of 7

Jeff Fuller went into the 2011 season with high expectations, but he hasn't been quite as productive as the Aggies need him to be. In fact, it seems like he's almost taken a step backward.

Fuller still has the size and tools to make it in the NFL, but the point is that he hasn't been too impressive this year. In his last five games, he caught just one score and averaged 56 receiving yards per game.

He's got a lot to prove in order to climb the draft board; if he can bring his A-game against of remaining opponents Oklahoma, Kansas State and Texas, he can paint a better picture for NFL scouts.

Hot: Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State Cowboys

5 of 7

Justin Blackmon's amazing season has helped catapult Oklahoma State into the Big 12 lead and the BCS title picture. He's not just hot right now, he's been hot all year.

The Cowboys' top pass catcher is averaging 104 yards per game this season, and he already has three multi-touchdown games.

While he doesn't have the length of Calvin Johnson, or the route-running skills of Marvin Harrison, Blackmon does have plenty of speed, strength and skills to lead him toward the top of the NFL draft board.

Not Hot: Chris Owusu, Stanford Cardinal

6 of 7

Chris Owusu is part of a great all-around offense at Stanford. So let's cut him some slack because he's not the type of receiver they depend on to carry the entire team.

But he's cooled off since conference play started. In his last five games, Owusu has averaged 38 yards per game and has caught just one touchdown pass.

At the beginning of the season, Owusu seemed all set for a huge year and worthy of at least a third-round selection. Now he's probably closer to being a fourth-round pick.
