Police to Review Footage of John Terry's Racist Rant Against Anton Ferdinand

Zachary D. RymerOct 31, 2011

Chelsea defender John Terry is already in hot water for allegedly racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a match on Oct. 23. What happens next could either clear Terry's name for good, or put him in even deeper trouble.

According to a report from The Guardian, police have requested footage from television cameras at Loftus Road for a closer look at the incident. They are still determining whether or not to launch a full investigation.

For his part, Ferdinand has already issued a written testimony to the Football Association, and he said in a statement on Monday that he has "very strong feelings" about what happened.

Terry, meanwhile, has yet to present his side of the story in writing to the FA. He and Chelsea are in Belgium, and the hope is that his written testimony will be delivered in a few days' time.

If the police feel a formal inquiry is needed, they will interview the two players on their own.

Per an Associated Press report, Terry claims that the incident in question is being taken out of context.

"I thought Anton was accusing me of using a racist slur against him," he said after last Sunday's match. "I responded aggressively, saying that I never used that term."

There's no denying that the incident happened at an inconvenient time, as it came in the middle of English soccer's anti-racism week, which is meant to call attention to how far English soccer has come since the 1970s and 1980s when racial abuse was commonplace.

After the FA opened its own investigation into the matter, Terry said he was looking forward to "clearing my name as soon as possible."

The police are going to look at footage from 20 different cameras. If they see something they don't like, Terry may have to wait a while before his name is cleared.

If it is cleared at all.
