Dallas Cowboys Must Grab Andrew Luck

Eric BallOct 31, 2011

Tony Romo is never going to win a Super Bowl.

He has given us the sort of sample size to realize as much. It’s time to cut your losses and start looking towards the future.

The Dallas Cowboys aren’t going to win the “suck for Luck” sweepstakes…but giving up a couple of first-rounders would infuse hope once again. Right now, there is no faith for a football team that has one of the most passionate fanbases in all of sports.

Romo is turning into the real life version of Groundhog Day.

He plays incredibly well for a few games while putting up gaudy stats, only to revert back to mediocrity when his fanbase believes in him the most.

Romo may have decent numbers in 2011 (1,959 yards, 11 TDs, 7 INTs, 3 fumbles), but he has a knack for coming up short when his team needs him most.

With an opportunity to really put the Philadelphia Eagles behind the eight ball in the NFC East, they were promptly humiliated, 34-7. Romo was pressured early on and became rattled against his division rival.

Romo has a tendency to lock in on one receiver like a rookie. It leads to way too many turnovers and it seems like a problem that isn’t going to be fixed at this point.

He has the gunslinger mentality of Brett Favre, without the clutch gene to justify all the turnovers.

Romo has a grand total of one postseason win in his career, and has some incredibly memorable stink bombs. Remember the botched snap against the Seahawks? Or how about the 34-3 throttling at the hands of Favre and the Vikings?

There isn’t a way to measure how a player will perform under pressure...but it’s clear something is missing with Romo. I’m not saying Luck has it, but nobody will know until he is placed into the situation.

Romo is 31 years old and is not going to magically improve at this point. The Cowboys are heading towards yet another uninspired season with the ceiling being a Wild Card spot.

Jerry Jones has been Romo’s biggest supporter, but at what point does he take a step back and realize that his dreams of another Super Bowl can only come true if change is made.

Who knows if Luck has what it takes to win a ring? But we know Romo doesn’t have what it takes.
