Nick Diaz vs. GSP: Diaz Will Defeat Georges St-Pierre

Jeffrey McKinneyOct 31, 2011

At UFC 137, Nick Diaz gave B.J. Penn the worst beatdown of his career.

After leaving Penn’s left eye swollen nearly shut, Diaz called out UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

The trash talk earned Diaz a title fight with St-Pierre after he was pulled from a fight with the champ after missing two press conferences.

Diaz is arguably one of the best fighters in MMA today. But because he has not faced some of the UFC’s top competition in many years and because of his attitude, Diaz is often considered overrated.

When Diaz and St-Pierre meet, St-Pierre will without a doubt be the favorite to win.

But Diaz should not be thrown under the bus so easily.

Diaz, like St-Pierre, has not lost since 2007.

Both men lost their last bouts by TKO. But Diaz lost the fight due to cuts, as opposed to getting knocked out.

If you look at Diaz's record before this, the last time he lost decisively was in 2006 against Sean Sherk.

Diaz is arguably one of the best boxers and Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners in all of MMA.

This could prove to be a challenge for St-Pierre.

St-Pierre’s most recent fight was against Diaz’s teammate Jake Shields. Because Shields is good at both wrestling and jiu-jitsu, St-Pierre refused to go to the ground with him.

Despite not being a great striker, Shields damaged St-Pierre’s left eye and even took a round from him on scorecards.

St-Pierre will arguably have a wrestling advantage against Diaz. But Diaz has one of the best guards in MMA and is one of the best submission artists off his back.

St-Pierre will be the more technical striker, but if you go by recent fights, Diaz can do just as much damage than St-Pierre.

Diaz has crazy cardio much like St-Pierre and is willing to take punishment and keep pushing forward.

The odds will be against him, but Diaz has as good of a chance as anybody to not only defeat St-Pierre, but stop him.
