WWE News: New Muppet Details for Tonight's Monday Night Raw Supershow Revealed
Between an article posted this morning on Variety.com and a report from a site I won't link directly due to spyware content (WrestlingInc.com has a post of the news with credit by name), more details are coming out about tonight's Halloween edition of WWE Raw Supershow with special guests The Muppets. The Muppets' appearance to promote their new eponymous movie (opening Thanksgiving Day) was first announced about six weeks ago to a surprisingly mixed response.
Here are the various notable items revealed so far:
- Nine Muppets, including Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy (who are in the promo video for the show on WWE TV), will be on the show tonight. Muppeteers Steve Whitmire, Eric Jacobson and Bill Barretta are confirmed to be booked for the show, which means that just about every major Muppet other than Gonzo (performed by Dave Goelz, who has not yet been confirmed as booked) could appear.
- The Muppeteers were asked to be ready to perform Statler and Waldorf doing commentary for one match, which one would think has to be Jim Ross vs. Michael Cole. YES YES YES YES YES! Feel free to suggest various Statler and Waldorf-esque jokes (all ending with "DOHOHOHOHOHOHO!") about the match in the comments.
- As you'd expect, a ton of wrestlers are trying to get segments with The Muppets tonight. Even some people who work for the company but rarely go on the road are working the taping to be around the Muppets.
- The live action stars of the film, Jason Segel (also co-writer with Nick Stoller) and Amy Adams, will not be on the show.
- WWE had wanted to find a way to work with The Muppets for years but there was no real opportunity until the new movie was made. Meanwhile, Disney (parent company of The Muppets Studio) was happy to work with WWE again after setting up Hugh Jackman's appearance on Raw to promote "Real Steel."
- Variety quoted Stephanie McMahon-Levesque as saying, "We've had guest stars ranging from Jeremy Piven, to Shaq, to Bob Barker, and most recently Hugh Jackman, but I have to say I think we'll have the most fun with the Muppets!"
- WWE has made a point of advertising tonight's show several weeks in advance to generate buzz to increase viewership and foster a relationship with Disney by promoting the new movie.
As usual, Kaleb Kelchner will be liveblogging the show. If you're looking for a place to talk about the show in real time, the comment section of the live blog is a great place to do so.
Strap in folks, and get ready for what will most likely be one of the best episodes in the almost 19 year history of Monday Night Raw. If you're not looking forward to the show, then, well, all I can say is loosen up, stop taking everything so seriously for once, and watch Muppet clips on YouTube today (maybe starting with recent creations from the official Muppet Studios channel) until you realize just how awesome Raw will be tonight.
