Terrell Owens: Controversial WR Needs NFL More Than Ever

Terrell Owens is a 37-year-old wide receiver who is coming off major knee surgery and is one of the most controversial players in recent NFL history. So, it should not come as a shock that no team has come knocking on his door, but it would appear that legal woes are keeping him from walking away. 

According to a report from BlackSportsOnline.com, Owens is being taken to court by one of the women that he had a child with because he wants to lower his child support payments:

Owens, who is currently not on an NFL roster, wants to reduce the payments he’s making to baby mama Monique Reynolds because, according to his rep, he’s simply not getting paid these days.

The rep says Owens wants to make the payments a little more reasonable, adding, “His child support payments should mirror his income today and not be based on his income from over four years ago.”

Owens was due in court in Northern California for child support modification hearing on October 24, but didn’t show up. His rep says his lawyers tried to reschedule, but lawyers for Reynolds refused.

Far be it from me to question an athlete's passion to play a game that they love, assuming they can still play, but it certainly appears that Owens' motivation for wanting to continue to play has just as much to do with his personal problems as it does his love of the sport. 

Owens' financial problems have been documented on his VH1 reality television show, so this is not exactly breaking news, but it is still a shock to see someone who has made as much money as he did be struggling as much as he is. 

Of course, it is entirely possible that Owens is just trying to get his child support payments lowered because he does not want to give over money to the mother of his child. I don't know, that is just speculation on my part. 

We may never know the real reason that Owens wants to keep playing in the NFL, perhaps it is just the adrenaline rush he gets from being the center of attention, but when a story like this comes out, it does not make him look very good.
