College Football: An Alabama-LSU BCS Championship Would Not Be Surprising

Jeff KalafaOct 30, 2011

A rematch between No. 1 LSU (8-0) and No. 2 Alabama (8-0) in the BCS National Championship Game would not be surprising. Right now they're both among the nation's three best teams, along with Oklahoma State.

The stars have already started aligning for this rematch!

1. A close game between the two on Nov. 5. would help. Even better, a close game that the home team (Alabama) wins.

A win for the home team is what's expected and a loss for LSU wouldn't drop them that far down in the polls.

2. Both teams need to win the rest of their games and finish 13-0 and 11-1.

3. No. 3 Oklahoma State (8-0) needs to lose one game. There's a strong chance that this will occur on Dec. 3, when Oklahoma State hosts No. 6 Oklahoma (7-1).

Although Oklahoma lost a shocker to unranked Texas Tech last week, they rebounded by pounding  No. 14 Kansas State (7-1) 58-17.

4. No. 4 Stanford (8-0) has to lose one game. There is a very strong chance this will happen on Nov. 12. when they host No. 8 Oregon (7-1).

Stanford was lucky to escape with a triple-overtime win over USC on Saturday and Oregon has improved since their opening loss to LSU.

5. Pollsters have to come to their collective senses and not rank No. 5 Boise State (7-0) ahead of the loser of the Alabama-LSU game.

There's always a chance that Boise could end up with the No. 2 ranking or higher if they're one of only two undefeated teams at season's end.

But with their weak schedule, it's unlikely to happen.

Will an Alabama-LSU Rematch be Good for College Football?

A rematch of Alabama and LSU in the BCS National Championship Game will probably not be good for college football on a national level.  It would likely be a huge draw for the Southeastern states.

What makes this scenario such a real possibility is that Alabama, and especially LSU, have played strong non-conference schedules in addition to the rigors of the SEC regular season schedule.

Even if Oregon defeats Stanford soundly and makes the case that they lost their first game and have won all the rest, the game they lost was to LSU.

Alabama went on the road and soundly defeated No. 16 Penn State (7-1) 27-11.

Regardless of whether or not the BCS and ESPN want this matchup, it wouldn't be surprising if it's what the BCS computers spit out after the regular season and conference championships have ended.
