Why Chris Johnson Is Biggest Fantasy Football Flop Ever

Nicholas GossOct 30, 2011

Tennessee Titans All-Pro running back Chris Johnson was supposed to break out of his slump against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, but instead he only ran for 34 yards against the NFL's worst rushing defense.

This season Johnson has become the biggest flop in the history of fantasy football.

His minuscule 2.82 yards per carry is not what fantasy owners expected when they selected Johnson in the top five picks of their fantasy league draft.

I think it's safe to say he's not earning his $50 million contract he received from the Titans just prior to the season, of which $30 million is guaranteed.

Johnson's 34-yard performance against the Colts was his second highest rushing total of the season, which is far from what we expected.

If you thought his game against the Colts was bad, Johnson rushed for 18 yards on 10 carries last week against the Houston Texans. Less than two yards per carry.

His best rushing performance of the season was a 101-yard effort against the Cleveland Browns on October 2.

The weirdest thing about his massively disappointing season is that nothing seems to be wrong.

Johnson does not seem to be bothered by an injury, his Titans offensive line is very good and the team as a whole hasn't done too poorly this season.

It's not possible he just lost his talent, so what's wrong? Could it be the pressure to perform for fantasy owners? Pressure to fulfill his new contract?

It might seriously be pressure from trying to perform for fantasy owners. Not only is Johnson a fabulous rusher, he's one of the best pass-catching backs in football.

Johnson only has 24 catches and no receiving touchdowns this season.

Johnson is getting about 16 carries per game this season, and got about 20 per game last season. This is not a big difference, and with his terrible 2.82 yards per carry average, Johnson can't use the excuse that he's not getting enough touches to be effective.

Johnson just looks disinterested, and doesn't have the same passion and high-intensity play he displayed when he was trying to prove himself in the NFL.

Even when guys get their major payday, they don't see a drop in production as bad as this.

Chris Johnson has gone from a top five player in the NFL who rushed for 2,006 yards in 2009, to one of the league's worst RBs.

Chris Johnson is the biggest flop in fantasy football history. He has ruined fantasy teams and shows no signs of getting back to his All-Pro status.

No injuries and no excuses can be made. Is there anyone who has disappointed fantasy football owners more, ever?
