Arsenal FC: Why Is Now the Perfect Time to Have a Player Like Gervinho?

Raul HingoraniOct 30, 2011

Over the summer, Arsenal lost two of their best players, Cesc Fábregas and Samir Nasri, but they also acquired various other players. One of them was Gervinho.

He has already proven to be a big asset for the Gunners, assisting many of his teammates and scoring some goals of his own. With the situation Arsenal is in, Gervinho is the perfect kind of player for the club to have, and I will explain why.

First of all, he came to Arsenal a French champion, as he won Ligue 1 with Lille. This just shows that Gervinho has enough experience to be part of the English Premiere League. This league is know for its physicality, and based on how the Ivorian forward is playing, he seems to be handling the conditions pretty well.

Next, Gervinho's pace. Gervinho has been efficient on both flanks of the attack. Either way, he has managed to produce goals.

But recently he has been playing on the left wing. His pace has been a huge factor in him dribbling players. It is because of his dribbling skills that he has been able to penetrate the box and string together some passes.

The Ivorian might not be the fastest guy on the pitch, but his dribbling skills make up for it. He is still fast enough to lead a counter-attack, but he is not Theo Walcott-fast.

Generally, speed doesn't really make that much of a difference if one has the dribbling skills. Usually a winger doesn't get a wide-open space to run through, apart from on counter-attacks. That is why Gervinho is effective anyway.

Gervinho's passing skills are equally stellar, as he is able to string passes together whether he is surrounded by defenders or not.

Recently, Arsenal recently took on Chelsea and demolished them in a 5-3 victory. For one of the goals, Gervinho received a magnificent pass from Aaron Ramsey and came face-to-face with the goalie. He then passed it to Van Persie for the finish.

This proves that Gervinho has the will to penetrate the box, and also shows he isn't that selfish.

Gervinho also has a pretty good shot. He hasn't scored many goals so far as a Gunner, but the goals he did score have been nice ones. He usually isn't much of a goal-scorer, in the way that he wouldn't win a golden boot, but he still scores goals once every two or three games.

He is more of a playmaker than a scorer himself.

Gervinho has just arrived at Arsenal and has already put in some inspiring performances. For example, in the Stoke City game Gervinho scored a goal and assisted Robin Van Persie twice.

I wouldn't expect the Ivorian to leave anytime soon. With his inspiring performances, other forwards could get influenced by his decisions. For example, young gunner Alex Oxlade-Chaimberlain was just acquired this summer and has a lot of potential as a forward.

No one would want him to leave during his prime.

So basically, Gervinho has all the necessary skills to be successful at his position and to aid the Gunners in their period of recovery. They have already taken a huge step in their recovery by pulverizing Chelsea, so fans can only expect more from the Ivorian and the team.
