Pacquaio vs. Marquez: Pac-Man Will Need Mayweather After Poor PPV Totals

Brian MaziqueOct 31, 2011

Manny Pacquiao fans have to realize that Pac-Man needs Floyd Mayweather, Jr. far more than Floyd needs him. The pay-per-view totals from this weekend's welterweight title bout with Juan Manuel Marquez will prove that point further.

Marquez is a quality fighter and this is the third fight between the two. Each of the two fights before this one have been good to great bouts. Mayweather's fight with Victor Ortiz drew an estimated 1.25 million domestic purchases. Don't expect Pacquiao-Marquez III to come anywhere close to that. I'd say 500,000 is a much more realistic total.

So, though many boxing fans may not like it, this clearly says Mayweather is in control.

They will produce the biggest pay-per-view in boxing history together, but Mayweather will collect big pay days regardless. That isn't the case for Pacquiao. Unless he can find an opponent with enough charisma to augment the fight's appeal, his numbers will suffer.

Pac-Man is likable but not polarizing and that is what sells pay-per-views. People either need to want to watch you dominate or get killed. The less middle ground the more appealing the fighter will be in pay-per-views

Floyd is the epitome of polarizing. His fans are just as passionate as his haters. The same cannot be said for followers of Pacquiao.
