NFL Week 8 Cardinals vs. Ravens: Halftime Observations for the Cardinals

Joseph MerkelOct 30, 2011

After an embarrassing showing on Monday night against the Jaguars, the Ravens are facing a must-win game. No better time to kick them while they're down.

The Cardinals hit the scoreboard first, and their defensive coordinator has an automatic advantage. The Ravens received a lot of criticism after Ray Rice was scarcely involved on Monday night. The Ravens have shown that they will be getting him the ball all the game, so Ray Horton should be thinking run for most of the game. One of the biggest keys will be whether he can predict when Baltimore will take a shot deep down field.

Let's take a look at a few observations from the first half, and some other keys to the Cardinals getting back in the win column.

1) Takeaways

Ravens' QB Joe Flacco has looked shaky at best and the Cardinals would be smart to keep bringing pressure in the second half. After a fumble set up a go-ahead touchdown, Horton should be licking his chops to send Darnell Dockett & Co. to get after Flacco. Don't give the guy time to throw or he could make you pay over the top.

2) 8 in the Box

Rice is going to get the ball more than half the time. Put eight in the box against one of the league's best running backs and if a passing play unfolds get after the QB. You can't let Flacco get the opportunity to audible to his top running back.

3) Run the Clock

After a Patrick Peterson punt return for a touchdown, the Cardinals have to keep the ball on the ground. Every first down they can convert milks precious seconds that the Ravens can never get back. This would be a huge upset and would surely cut down a load of confidence the Ravens have heading into a crucial week nine matchup vs. the Steelers.
