BCS Rankings: How Far Oklahoma Sooners Will Move Up

Josh SchochOct 30, 2011

The Oklahoma Sooners embarrassed the Kansas State Wildcats, and they are moving up the BCS rankings. Coming into Week 9 ranked No. 9, the Sooners will be moving up several spots.

Led by Landry Jones, the Sooners beat the Wildcats 58-17.  They scored 44 straight points to end the game and outscored Kansas State 35-0 in the second half.  Jones threw for five touchdowns and 505 yards in the game.

The Sooners went into Kansas State's home and they thrashed the Wildcats. In a game that Kansas State was favored in, the Sooners took control and won by 41.

This was the most impressive game Oklahoma has played this season, and it gives OU a second win against a team that was ranked in the Top 10 at the time, with the first coming at Florida State 23-13, another big road win.  The Sooners also beat the then-ranked No. 11 Texas Longhorns 55-17 at a neutral site in Dallas, which was essentially a home game for the Longhorns.

The Sooners have won these three big games, two of which came in blowout fashion, and to do so in a hostile environment is huge.

OU ranks second in passing yards per game (396.6), and it has scored the fifth most points per game (46.0).

This team also plays tenacious defense, giving up less than 20 points per game.  The Sooners' defense always comes up big in big games, allowing less than 16 points per game in those three marquee victories.

If the Sooners were undefeated they would surely be a Top 2 team, but they unfortunately lost to Texas Tech, 41-38.

While this loss is a huge setback, this team has now shown enough to be ranked in the Top 5.

Once they are given their No. 5 ranking, the Sooners can be involved in the BCS National Championship if they win out, beating No. 16 Texas A&M next week and No. 3 Oklahoma State in the final game of the season.

Look for the Sooners to be playing for the title when it's all said and done, and considering how well they've done in big games, they should win it all.
