DeMarco Murray and 4 Players We're Buying into Too Soon

Ryan AlfieriOct 30, 2011

Even though DeMarco Murray put up huge numbers against the Rams in his debut as a starter, we must calm our praise for the man. Not to take anything away from what he did, but Murray ran through some pretty large holes. On a lot of his big runs, he ran straight through, almost untouched. He did not have to make a lot guys miss with lateral movement.

Murray may very well turn out to be a very good player for the Cowboys, but let's see how he performs against someone besides the Rams defense. He will probably put up good numbers against the suspect Eagles run defense, but I want to see him flash more before we anoint him as one of the top backs.

Le's take a look at other players who we are buying into way too soon.

Torrey Smith

1 of 4

Smith is another player who benefited from making his debut against the Rams. After his three-touchdown performance, Smith's numbers have fallen off dramatically. He is not a polished route-runner, and if you take away his ability to get deep, Smith is simply not skilled enough to hurt you in other ways.

Smith still has plenty to time to perfect his game, but let's allow him to do that before we buy into him too early.

Christian Ponder

2 of 4

Ponder's first start against the Packers certainly was promising, but we should wait to see more from Ponder before we buy into him. The Packers have not had a very good pass defense this year, and it is only a matter of time before Ponder has a stinker against a top defense.

How he handles this inevitable adversity will show us a lot more about Ponder.

Plaxico Burress

3 of 4

The Jets finally found a way to get Plaxico involved, and he caught three touchdowns as a result. However, he did not catch a touchdown over five yards.

The Jets are going to love Burress' presence in the red zone, but I want to see bigger plays between 20s before we can say that the old Plax is back.

Ryan Kerrigan

4 of 4

Kerrigan had a huge start to the season, but since has cooled off. He has played solid, but he has not played anywhere near the big game he had against the Giants. In that game, he returned a tipped pass for a touchdown, but as many of us know, that is not necessarily an indicator of how good of a linebacker Kerrigan is.

Kerrigan still has a bright future, but we should wait to see a bit more out of him before we say that the Redskins have one of the best sets of outside linebackers in football.
