January Transfer Window: Arsenal Have a Real Chance of Landing Mario Gotze

James DudkoOct 30, 2011

The Daily Mirror reports that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger believes he has a legitimate chance of tempting Borussia Dortmund into selling star playmaker Mario Gotze in January.

The report indicates that the poor European form of the reigning Bundelisga Champions, would create a financial vacuum, which could be filled by the sale of the German side's prize asset.

Securing the signature of Gotze would be a massive coup for Wenger.  This is the kind of transfer that would restore faith in the Arsenal transfer policy and demonstrate a clear signal of intent from the Gunners that the club is still a major player in then hunt for top trophies.

At 19, Gotze is the ideal age for Arsenal's traditional transfer approach and he would add some star power to a team short of world class calibre names.

A diminutive attacking midfielder, Gotze is an exciting prospect.  He relies on speed of thought and quick feet to consistently threaten an opposition defense.

Gotze displays intelligent movement to always locate space to receive the ball and is inventive and decisive when in possession.

He offers good goalscoring potential, but his main attributes are his creative instincts and vision.  Gotze has the varied passing range that would help each member of the Arsenal forward line to flourish.

He was one of the leading figures in Dortmund's title winning campaign last season, but has been slightly subdued so far during their stuttering title defense.

It was difficult to be overly impressed when Arsenal fans were offered a glimpse of Gotze during the Gunners 1-1, Champions League draw in Dortmund.

Gotze was largely anonymous for large portions of the game, particularly in the second half.  But his talent is beyond question and he would join Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere to give Arsenal the most gifted and exciting young midfield trio in the game.

The Arsenal staff will have another chance to asses Gotze, when the Gunners entertain Dortmund in their penultimate Champions League group game, on Wednesday, November 23rd.

The Mirror suggests that an early exit from the Champions League by Dortmund, who currently prop up Arsenal's group with just a solitary point, would provide sufficient incentive to sell, should Arsenal table a bid of around £17.5 million.
