UFC 137 Results: 3 Questions Nick Diaz Answered Against BJ Penn

Adam OsterkampOct 30, 2011

After his performance at UFC 137 against BJ Penn, Nick Diaz undoubtedly recruited many more fans despite his brash and unprofessional demeanor.

For many UFC fans, Saturday night was the first time they saw Diaz fight. No doubt those who hadn’t seen him before were impressed with his ability.

For the rest of us, the song remained the same, as Diaz came out against Penn and did what he always does, and answered some questions at the same time.

Can Diaz Defeat Elite Level Competition?

1 of 3

Lots of people have put the competition Diaz has faced in question. Although he had won 10 in a row going into his fight with Penn, many people believed Diaz didn’t have what it took to hang in there with the UFC’s talent.

Diaz showed everyone that he absolutely does have what it takes to defeat top tier opponents when he out classed Penn on Saturday night.

At only 28 years old, Diaz has a lot more time to become one of the best fighters ever, and his fight against Georges St-Pierre is the next step in his legacy.

Can His Chin Stand Up to Good Boxing?

2 of 3

When he faced off against Paul Daley, Diaz was in trouble a few times when he got rocked by the heavy-handed slugger.

He was able to cover up and weather the storm against Daley, but many people were wondering if his chin could hold up against a precision striker the likes of Penn.

Diaz didn’t deviate from his norm in his fight with Penn. Not only did he do his typical hands down taunting, he actually butted his head against Penn’s fist a few times!

One thing is for sure: Diaz doesn’t doubt his chin.

Can He Be Consistent?

3 of 3

One of the reasons Diaz is such a fun fighter to watch is because of how out of control he can be. He sets an insane pace and, as I’ve already said, often taunts his opponents striking ability.

While he was willing to do those types of things against lesser opponents, we were all wondering if he would treat Penn the same way.

Well, now we’ve seen him do it against Penn, so no doubt he’ll do the same thing against GSP. The only question that remains now is whether or not St-Pierre can silence Diaz or will Diaz’s tactics be too much for the current champ.
