UFC 137 Results: 3 Reasons Nick Diaz Deserves a Title Shot

Adam OsterkampOct 30, 2011

Despite racking up a very impressive win streak and defeating one of the best fighters of all time in BJ Penn, Nick Diaz will still be a big underdog going into his fight with Georges St-Pierre.

While he made some mistakes going into his first scheduled fight with the current champ, one can only hope that Diaz will not be making the same mistake twice.

Despite his past inability to show up, Diaz has absolutely earned a title shot against GSP. Read on to see why.

He Defeated BJ Penn

1 of 3

It was a sad thing for almost all fight fans to see as BJ Penn announced he’d likely be retiring following his loss to Diaz. It was a bittersweet moment for many, however, because Diaz was able to look great against elite-level competition

Although he did defeat one of the greats on Saturday night, many people will argue that Diaz will face an entirely different fighter when he goes up against St-Pierre.

Diaz hasn’t earned his UFC gold yet, but he did earn his shot with the impressive victory over Penn.

He Has Won 11 Fights in a Row

Even though he was sporting an impressive 10-fight win streak going into his fight with Penn, Diaz was still doubted by many because there wasn’t enough elite competition on that list. That all changed Saturday night.

Not only did Diaz defeat one of the the truly great fighters the UFC has ever produced, he did it in dominant fashion.

Seeing the way Diaz worked Penn has every fight fan drooling for the match up between Diaz and St-Pierre. Will Diaz be the solution to the puzzle that is St-Pierre?

Diaz Is in St-Pierre’s Head

3 of 3

Call me a charlatan and a liar if you must, but Diaz is in St-Pierre’s head. Diaz has a crazy ability not only to agitate people, but to keep them on their toes with his unpredictability.

While Chael Sonnen is probably the best hype man in the business, it’s not an act with Diaz. He is legitimately an irrational person, and there’s no telling what he might do.

GSP has let Diaz get to him, and that can go a long way towards taking the best game planner in the business off his plan.

For us fight fans it’s a win-win. Maybe Diaz will make GSP to fight for the finish and we’ll get to see the St-Pierre from days gone by. Or perhaps Diaz will force GSP to fight at a pace he hasn’t had to in a while, and we’ll get one of the best fights in UFC history.

Whether you think Diaz is in St-Pierre’s head, one thing is for sure, Diaz doesn’t like him, and the build up to this fight will be fun to watch.
