Why DeMarco Murray Is Bound to Disappoint After Cowboys Debut

Jon DoveOct 30, 2011

DeMarco Murray had a great performance last week where he set several rookie rushing records. His performance was a surprise to most, as he didn't really impress in his previous opportunities. However, this performance has moved Murray into a position where he is going to receive a lot more touches.

Coming out of Oklahoma, Murray was expected to only play a secondary role on this Dallas team. He was sitting behind Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. However, both Jones and Choice have dealt with injuries forcing Murray into the lineup.

When I evaluated Murray as an NFL prospect, I didn't see a potential every down running back. He played with a high pad level, struggling to gain yards after contact. Murray has more straight line speed than lateral wiggle, limiting his elusiveness.

Murray appeared to be nothing more than a third down back. His biggest strength was his ability make plays in the passing game. He has very good hands and the speed to make plays after the catch. Murray is a good route runner, capable of lining up in different positions.

If you are expecting another 200-yard performance, you will be very disappointed. I could see Murray pushing for another 100-yard game this week versus the Eagles. However, the rest of the season will be filled with underwhelming rushing performances.

The Dallas Cowboys are a pass first football team. They like to put the ball in Tony Romo's hands and let him air it out. This fact is going to impact the amount of rushing attempts for Murray. The less touches for Murray will lower his chances for success.

Another factor impacting Murray's success will be the play of the offensive line. This unit is not playing at an elite level, especially on the interior. Murray is going to need better play from his offensive line if he wants to find continued success.
