UFC 137 Results: Can Nick Diaz Become the Best Welterweight Ever?

G DOct 29, 2011

While you never want to jump the gun with a fighter, it’s hard not to imagine Nick Diaz as one of the greatest of all time.

And Diaz proved why he could become one of the greatest ever throughout his performance with BJ Penn at UFC 137.

As action began, Penn hand the upper hand, stealing Round 1 from Diaz through combos and uppercuts.

But Diaz displayed his world-class conditioning by taking over in Round 2, landing blow after blow, hurting Penn.

“Same story, different round,” was the motto for Diaz as he continued to swing away at Penn in the third and final round.

When the final bell rang, it was Diaz who won his 11th consecutive fight via unanimous decision.

Diaz is not only one of the best conditioned fighters in the UFC today but arguably the best striker that mixed martial arts has seen in a long time.

While Diaz certainly has the potential to become the greatest Welterweight of all time, there‘s still a lot that needs to be accomplished in order for that to happen.

First and foremost, Diaz needs to prove he’s a legitimate contender by winning more than one fight.

Even having won 10 consecutive fights leading up to his bout at UFC 137, none of them consisted of UFC opponents.

Not only will Diaz have to be consistent over the course of his remaining UFC fights, but he’ll have to defeat the top level of competition.

In order to be the best, Diaz will have to beat the best.

Which means Diaz will have to defeat current Welterweight champion George St-Pierre

If Diaz can capture a victory over today’s greatest Welterweight, he’ll have earned the right to be considered the greatest of all time in his respected division.
